Couples Break in the Carpathians at Sinaia
Sinaia gives couples a mountain setting, two royal castles and a few places to eat, rather than a long list of attractions. This page covers what is available and what is not, so you can plan two or three unhurried days. Prices are in Romanian lei.
A base on the royal estate
Hotel Bastion is at Aleea Peleșului 2A, on the royal estate. Several other hotels have spas, among them the spa at Hotel Carpathia. Sinaia has no natural thermal springs, and the thermal spa towns of Romania are elsewhere, for example Băile Herculane and Băile Felix.
Where to eat
Taverna Sârbului is on Calea Codrului. Carol Gastro Bierhaus is at Aleea Peleșului 2, near the castle path. Check their hours before you plan an evening.
Peleș at a quiet hour
Early morning is the calm time on the cobbled Aleea Peleșului, and Peleș Castle opens at 09:15 Thursday to Sunday and 10:00 on Wednesday. It is shut on Monday and Tuesday. Even with the castle closed, its terraces and the grounds are open to walk. An adult ticket costs 100 lei at Peleș and 30 lei at the smaller Pelișor, where the gilded Golden Chamber is the highlight. Closures in 2026 are 2 November to 1 December for Peleș and 28 September to 3 November for Pelișor, and the dates change yearly. Book timed slots at bilete.peles.ro.
Up the mountain together
When the lifts run, the ride to Cota 2000 is worth doing together. The Telecabina Sinaia goes from the centre to Cota 1400, then the Gondola Carp continues up. The lower gondola section between Cota 1000 and Cota 1400 is closed, so the telecabina has long queues. Pick a clear day, because wind, fog and frost stop the lifts, and bring warm clothes for the plateau.
The Casino and the park
Dimitrie Ghica Park is a pleasant evening stroll, and the Casino there was built in 1912 and 1913 in the Neo-Romanian style. It is a conference centre now and the interior is open on guided tours, so there is no gambling.
Walking after dark
Bears visit the edges of town at night, drawn to waste bins. Walk on lit, busy streets, never feed or follow a bear for a photo, and go indoors if your phone sounds an RO-ALERT. Feeding bears can cost 10,000 to 30,000 lei in fines.
