A Quiet Lakeside Weekend for Two at Sevan
The Mood of the Lake
Sevan is a quiet mountain lake at about 1,900 m, not a resort strip. Couples come for fresh air, wide water views and a good meal. The evenings turn cool even in July, so pack a jacket, and plan one or two nights.
Rooms with a View
Two stays stand out. Best Western Bohemian Resort in Sevan offers a conventional resort stay. The Sevan Writers’ House, on the peninsula, is a Soviet modernist building from 1932 to 1935 by Gevorg Kochar and Mikael Mazmanyan (Architectuul ), with a lounge added in 1963 to 1965. Guest descriptions mention a circular dining room with floor-to-ceiling windows, and bedrooms in a separate wing. Both are listed on booking sites, and prices change by season, so check current rates through Booking.com .
First Light at Sevanavank
Go to the peninsula early and the churches are quiet. It costs nothing to enter and opens in daylight. About 200 uneven stone steps lead up, so wear flat shoes. The churches are in use, so cover shoulders and knees and speak softly. Read more: Sightseeing around Sevan .
Evening Tables
Collette on the M4 Sevan to Dilijan highway, at about the 8th km, is a lakeside spot for fish. Bohem is a studio tea house on Sayat-Nova Street in town, with live music and a terrace. Farmed trout, lake whitefish and crayfish kebab are the dishes to look for.
A Dinner Worth the Drive
Tsaghkunk Restaurant and Glkhatun is in Tsaghkunk, about 7 km north-west of Sevan. Chef Yura Sargsyan is known for the crayfish kebab, and lavash comes from a tonir oven. It appeared on Forbes’ 2021 list. Book ahead and arrange a driver for the return.
A Calmer Shore
Further round on the north-east side, Shoghakat and the Artanish Peninsula have camping, a beach cafe and hills with views over the lake. Windsports use the beach in summer, so the water can be busy there.
If You Swim
July and August are the swimming months, and the water is cool to cold, roughly 15 to 24 C. Winds rise suddenly, so keep to short dips in the shallows.
Packing for Two
Bring a warm layer for evening terraces, flat shoes for the peninsula steps and cash in dram for taxis and small cafes.
Getting There
The M4 from Yerevan is 65 km, 1 to 1.5 hours by car. A hired driver makes dinner stops easy. Minibuses run to Sevan town, but check the last return time before planning an evening out.
