Sevan Day Trip Planner from Yerevan
Route Overview
Sevan is 65 km from Yerevan. On the M4 the drive takes 1 to 1.5 hours. Sevanavank is on the peninsula north-east of Sevan town, about 5 km by road, while Hayravank and Noratus lie further along the western and south-western shore. All three are in Gegharkunik Province, so one day can stay inside a single province.
Option 1: Short Lake Visit
Drive or take a minibus to the peninsula, climb about 200 steps to the churches, walk the shore and eat lake fish. This fits a half day with a long lunch. In July and August add a swim at a free public beach, where the water is cool to cold.
Option 2: Western Shore Loop
For a full day, start with Sevanavank early, then continue to Hayravank, about 20 km along the shore, a late 9th-century church on a rock above the water. Next comes Noratus Cemetery, about 30 to 35 km south of Sevan, where several hundred to almost a thousand khachkars stand. Gavar, the provincial capital, is a convenient place to stop for a meal before you return to Yerevan. A car or a hired driver for the day makes this loop easy. Read more: Sightseeing around Sevan describes each stop.
Option 3: Public Transport
Minibuses to Sevan town take about 45 minutes to 1 hour 15, and the fare is about 800 to 1,500 AMD. Gai station and the Northern Bus Station are both named as departure points, so confirm which one before you go and check t-armenia.com for times. In summer, a weekend train runs on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from Yerevan main station, with details at railway.am . Sevan town is about 3 km from the shore, so a short taxi ride is needed to reach the peninsula.
Extensions
Dilijan. Dilijan is roughly 37 km from Sevan along the road. A day with Haghartsin, Goshavank, Parz Lake and Old Dilijan is possible on a tour, though a night in Dilijan suits it better.
Tsaghkadzor. About 22 to 25 km from Sevan. Kecharis is free, and the chairlift runs from 10:00 to 17:30 from 7 October 2026 at about 3,000 AMD a ride.
Not for a day. Tatev in Syunik is roughly 250 km from the lake, and Garni and Geghard lie beyond Yerevan, so give each its own day.
Day-Trip Checklist
- A windproof layer, since the lake sits at about 1,900 m.
- Cash in dram for taxis, boats and cafes.
- Shoulders and knees covered at the churches.
- An early start, because winds can rise suddenly on the lake.
