Planning a Longer Stay Around St Helier
Staying several nights in St Helier lets you reach most of Jersey by bus and sleep in the same bed each night. The only public operator is LibertyBus, and almost every route starts at Liberation Station on the Esplanade, so you can plan each day outward from there. Fares and timetables are listed at libertybus.je. Costs below are in Jersey pounds.
Things that shape the plan
- Tides. Spring tides here range over 10 m. Elizabeth Castle can always be reached by amphibious ferry, but its causeway is a low-tide route, and the Corbiere causeway has a warning siren.
- Seasons. Elizabeth Castle’s 2026 season ends on 1 November and Jersey Seafaris sails from spring to autumn, so confirm dates for the time of year you are visiting.
- Passports. France, Guernsey and Sark all need one.
Three days from a St Helier base
| Day | Morning | Afternoon | Evening |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Walk through Royal Square and the Central Market | Elizabeth Castle, timed around the ferry or causeway | Dinner on the harbour or near Havre des Pas |
| 2 | Jersey War Tunnels in St Lawrence | St Ouen’s Bay for a surf lesson or a beach walk | Sunset at La Corbiere Lighthouse |
| 3 | Mont Orgueil Castle and Gorey Pier | Les Ecrehous boat trip from St Catherine Breakwater | Dinner at Bohemia, Michelin-starred as of the 2025 guide |
The Jersey War Tunnels hold a solemn Occupation exhibition built in a complex dug by slave and forced labourers, so allow time to take it in at a quiet pace. Entry for adults is £21.00, and route 8 or 28 goes from Liberation Station. Elizabeth Castle and Mont Orgueil each charge £19.50 for adults, and the 7-day Jersey Heritage Pass at £52.00 covers both. Read about tickets at jerseyheritage.org , and book the boat through jerseyseafaris.com .
A five-day coastal walk
The whole shoreline is about 48 miles, and splitting it into five stages lets you return to St Helier each evening by bus. Stage lengths are approximate.
- Stage 1: St Helier to St Aubin and La Corbiere, about 10 miles, by the bay and the Railway Walk.
- Stage 2: La Corbiere to Greve de Lecq, about 12 miles, along the sands and dunes of St Ouen’s Bay and north towards Plemont.
- Stage 3: Greve de Lecq to Bonne Nuit Bay, about 9 miles, on the highest and roughest cliff paths.
- Stage 4: Bonne Nuit Bay to Rozel and Gorey, about 10 miles, past Bouley Bay and St Catherine Breakwater.
- Stage 5: Gorey to St Helier, about 7 miles, on the flat south-east coast through Havre des Pas.
Other islands and France
Manche Iles Express connects Jersey with Sark, Guernsey and Carteret from April to September, and its crossings resume on 3 April 2027. No Jersey to Guernsey ferry runs in 2026, so check every operator before building a Channel Islands trip. Sark has no cars, with travel by foot, bicycle or horse-drawn carriage. St Malo can be a day trip on the DFDS fast ferry, with a crossing of about 2 hours. Use manche-iles.com for Sark sailings.
