Southern Iceland Activities With 2026 Costs
Most activities in Iceland’s Southern Region (Suðurland) fall into two groups: sights that cost nothing beyond parking, and bookable experiences with a set price. All amounts here are Icelandic króna (ISK). Figures given as “about” can change, so confirm them before you pay.
Activities that cost little or nothing
- Seljalandsfoss. The fall is about 60 m high. A path leads behind it, but the path is shut when ice builds up, roughly November to March. Parking is about 1,000 ISK.
- Skógafoss. Around 527 steps rise beside the fall to a viewing platform. Parking is about 1,000 ISK.
- Þingvellir. Walking the park is free, and parking costs 1,000 ISK a day per car with 5 or fewer seats. The national park’s parking page lists every tariff.
- Geysir and Gullfoss. Neither charges an entry fee. Check at each whether the car park is charged.
Activities with a ticket
- Glacier hike on Sólheimajökull. Roughly 3 to 4 hours with a certified guide, from about 13,500 ISK. The guide provides crampons, ice axe, helmet and harness. See Troll.is or Adventures.is for operators.
- Silfra snorkelling. From 19,990 ISK with DIVE.IS . Add 1,500 ISK for the Þingvellir fee, and expect to pay for P5 parking unless the operator includes it.
- Katla ice cave. The Katla Fast Track from Vík starts at 29,900 ISK (Katla Track ).
- Secret Lagoon, Flúðir. 4,500 ISK for adults 15 and over. See the lagoon’s own site for hours and concessions.
Staying safe
Reynisfjara’s black sand beach has sneaker waves that reach far up the sand with no warning. Obey the warning lights: stay out of the yellow zone when yellow is lit, and do not pass the sign when red is lit. Keep well back from the surf, never turn your back on the sea, and avoid the basalt columns and the Hálsanefshellir cave in rough water.
On glaciers, go only with a certified guide. Check safetravel.is for alerts and call 112 in an emergency.
Planning around the season
The highland roads to Þórsmörk and Landmannalaugar are for 4x4 vehicles only and usually open late June to early September. They are closed in winter. Look at road.is for road status. Outside summer, the lower-cost stops along the South Coast and the Golden Circle are the realistic choices, and the ticketed activities above are the ones to book ahead.
