Multi-Day Santiago Itineraries in the Galapagos
Santiago Island has nowhere to sleep, so a stay of more than one day means a live-aboard cruise through the Galapagos. Ships anchor off the island and send guests ashore in small groups with a naturalist. Santiago is a common stop on central-island routes, and the way you pick a cruise decides which of its sites you see.
Santiago stops that cruises list
- Puerto Egas (James Bay): a coastal walk past fur seals and young sea lions, with snorkeling from the black-sand beach on some programmes.
- Sullivan Bay: the lava walk, with tree molds near the start.
- Espumilla Beach: reddish-gold sand, a short hike and snorkeling. Green turtles nest here.
- Buccaneer Cove: cliffs and sea stacks, mostly seen by panga or while snorkeling.
- Cousins Rock: a small rock about 10 m high north-east of Santiago, which diving cruises include.
Santiago is usually paired with neighbours: Bartolome, Rabida with its red-sand beach, and Sombrero Chino, the cone-shaped islet at Santiago’s south-east tip.
How to choose a cruise
- Read the itinerary. Each cruise lists its landings. Itineraries vary in which Santiago sites they include, so match the list against what you want to see.
- Compare ship types. Galapagos Legend, Coral I and Coral II are among the vessels listed at gogalapagos.com. Cruises are priced per cabin and by class, so ask for a written quote.
- Pick walking or diving. A diving liveaboard schedules Cousins Rock dives, where sharks and rays are commonly seen, and the site suits intermediate divers.
- Check what is extra. Wetsuit hire often is.

Rules that apply on every landing
Stay 2 m from wildlife, use no flash, and leave drones at home. Camping is allowed only in a few authorised areas, not at visitor sites. The lava is very hot in full sun, so closed shoes and sun protection are essential.
