Lake Sevan With Kids: Beaches and Easy Stops
Before You Go
Lake Sevan sits at about 1,900 m, so the air is cool and the sun is strong. Pack a windproof layer for every child, sun hats, sunscreen, water shoes and a spare set of dry clothes. The lake is part of Sevan National Park, and families come mainly in July and August.
Public Beaches
Sevan National Park keeps free public beaches open each summer, with sunshades, showers, changing rooms and playgrounds. The season usually runs from about 1 July. Most beaches are pebbly rather than sandy.
Water is cool to cold, roughly 15 to 24 C in July and August depending on the spot, so expect quick dips rather than long swims. Children should stay in the shallows with an adult at arm’s length. Ministry reports mention a rescue service and water patrol at the official beaches, but do not assume a lifeguard is watching your stretch of shore. Winds can rise suddenly, so leave the water when the breeze picks up.
Boats
Summer boat rides depart from the docks by the peninsula. The shorter trips and crossings suit children best. Ask the price before boarding, check that lifejackets are available in child sizes and decline if the wind is up.
The Sevanavank Climb
About 200 uneven stone steps lead from the car park to the two churches, and some stretches have no railings. Pushchairs will not manage them, so carry babies in a sling or leave them at the foot with a second adult. Older children will like the views over the water. The churches are open daily in daylight, free to enter and in active use, so ask children to keep their voices low and cover shoulders and knees. Read more: Sightseeing around Sevan .
Tonir Lavash at Tsaghkunk
Tsaghkunk Restaurant and Glkhatun, in a village about 7 km north-west of Sevan, bakes lavash in a tonir, a clay oven sunk into the floor. Some gastro tours include a baking demonstration, and tables are best booked ahead.
Meals and Snacks
Lake fish on the menu includes farmed trout and whitefish. Collette sits on the M4 Sevan to Dilijan highway. Carry your own snacks and water to the beach.
Getting There
Sevan is 65 km from Yerevan, 1 to 1.5 hours by car. A hired driver for the day gives the family flexibility. Minibuses take about 45 minutes to 1 hour 15 and stop in Sevan town, about 3 km from the shore, so add a taxi.
