Joining a Tour of Shakhrisabz Attractions
Most people see Shakhrisabz as part of a tour out of Samarkand, and the choices come down to a few questions. This page answers them in order: what the tour covers, how you travel, what you pay and what to ask in advance.
What does a tour cover?
The core of every itinerary is the Timurid group of sites: Ak-Saray, Dorut Tilavat, Dorus Saodat and the underground crypt behind it. At Ak-Saray you see the two surviving gate pylons, about 38 m high, from outside, together with the plaza. Dorut Tilavat contains the tomb of Timur’s spiritual teacher, Sheikh Shamsiddin Kulol, and the Kok Gumbaz mosque. Dorus Saodat contains the tombs of Jahangir and Umar Shaykh.
The crypt was intended for Timur, though he lies in Gur-e Amir in Samarkand. Both tomb complexes are in daily religious use, so tour groups keep their voices low and dress modestly.
How do you get there?
Tours from Samarkand go by road, about 80 to 90 km over the Takhtakaracha Pass, and take roughly two hours each way. Some operators add a stop at a viewpoint on the pass. A private tour suits a small group or a family that wants its own pace. Another option is the Afrosiyob train, which runs between Tashkent and Shakhrisabz on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. It leaves Tashkent at 06:33 and returns from Shakhrisabz at 16:24. Check eticket.railway.uz before you plan around it.
What does it cost?
One operator charges about USD 105 for a private day tour from Samarkand, and entry tickets are extra. Site tickets are sold individually at around 40,000 UZS each (about USD 3), and the Amir Temur Museum is around 30,000 UZS. Fees vary by operator, so ask for a written list of what is included.
Should you add a local guide?
A guide on site can explain the history behind each tomb and the ruin. Agree the fee first and pay in cash.
Which extras are worth it?
- The Chorsu covered bazaar and its bathhouse, a short walk from the monuments, with a dome about 21 m across.
- The Amir Temur Museum, an indoor stop in the Chubin Madrasah, a 17th-century building restored in 1997.
- Electric carts between the monuments, which have run since 2016. Ask on arrival whether they are operating and what the fare is.
What about winter?
Snow and ice sometimes close the Takhtakaracha section of the M-39. Confirm the day before, and ask the operator how they handle a closure.
Where to compare options
Search results for tours from Samarkand are on GetYourGuide . One operator’s day itinerary lists the typical stops, and the Dorus Saodat page on the tourism portal describes the ensemble.
