Bernina Line, Tirano and Sils Day Trips
Four outings start from St. Moritz, and three of them use the Rhaetian Railway (RhB). Each has a season or a seat-reservation rule that is worth knowing in advance. Prices are in Swiss francs (CHF).

Tirano by Bernina train
The Bernina line is a UNESCO World Heritage route and crosses the border into Italy, so carry a passport or ID card. Reserve a panoramic seat for about CHF 32 each way if you want the large-window carriages. A winter timetable applies from 26 October to 12 December 2026. The Swiss Travel Pass pays the base fare on the Bernina and Albula lines but not the reservation. Timetables are on rhb.ch .
Morteratsch glacier
Take the train to Morteratsch and follow the signed trail up toward the glacier. The walk is free, and a round trip of about 6 km is the most you should plan. Ropes mark the safe edge. The ice cave is off limits, so stay out of it.
Sils Maria and Lake Sils
Sils Maria is the village on Lake Sils and is home to the Nietzsche-Haus, so check its opening times before you plan around it. In summer a boat crosses from Sils Maria to Maloja in about 40 minutes, with several sailings a day. The boat stops for winter.
Glacier Express
The Glacier Express needs a seat reservation of about CHF 54. Its service is paused from 11 October to 4 December 2026, so plan it for the weeks after the pause ends on 4 December.
Tips for the day
- Book panoramic seats ahead for weekend or holiday travel.
- Start early so you have daylight for the return.
- Pack a warm layer for the higher stations.
- Budget extra if you add a cable car, since travel passes do not cover Engadin lifts.
