Day Trips from Sinaia by Train and Road
Sinaia lies on the main railway between Bucharest and Brașov, so the towns on either side are easy to reach. This page sorts the outings by direction and gives the distances that matter. Prices are in Romanian lei.
North along the Prahova valley
Bușteni
The town of Bușteni lies roughly 10 km up the valley. Cantacuzino Castle, a Neo-Romanian castle and art gallery dating from 1911, is the main stop, and its exterior was used as Nevermore Academy in the Wednesday series, which was filmed outdoors only. A recent guide lists hours of Monday to Thursday 10:00 to 19:00 and Friday to Sunday until 20:00, so check castelulcantacuzino.ro before you leave.
The Bușteni to Babele cable car belongs to a separate operator. Adult return fares reported for it are very high, in the range of 215 to 230 lei, and wind closures are common. Treat it as a weather-dependent plan and look at the day’s status first.
Brașov
Brașov Old Town is about 45 km north. Council Square and the Black Church are the focal points, and the centre is compact enough for a half day on foot. The onward line from Sinaia carries you there by rail. Look up times on cfrcalatori.ro or infofer.ro, since the number of trains is not fixed.
Beyond Brașov
Bran Castle and Râșnov Fortress are both reached through Brașov. Pair them if you start early, and look up each one’s hours and prices before travelling. Libearty Bear Sanctuary is in Zărnești, in Brașov County, about 1.25 hours by road from Sinaia. Contact the sanctuary for visiting arrangements and fees.
South to Bucharest
The train to Bucharest Gara de Nord takes about 1 hour 30 minutes, and it sidesteps the traffic that builds on the DN1 road at weekends.
Using the castle closure days
Peleș and Pelișor are closed on Monday and Tuesday, so those are the days to leave town. A trip to Bușteni or Brașov fills a Monday well, and Wednesday to Sunday can then go to the castles. Whichever outing you choose, check that the stop itself is open on your day before you set off.
Bears on any trip
Bears are present around Sinaia, including the edges of town and the Cota 1400 road, and feeding them is illegal, with fines of 10,000 to 30,000 lei. If a forest walk is part of your outing, go in daylight, make noise and never approach an animal. Phone 112 if a bear is in a village or town.
