Lika-Senj County Activity Planner
This planner sorts the main things to do in Lika-Senj County by when they work best. The county covers 5,353 square kilometres, from the Adriatic coast to the Plitvice Lakes, so choose a base for each day. Prices are in euros.
All year
- Plitvice walks: the Lower Lakes are usually open all winter, and the Upper Lakes usually reopen in early April. Winter adult day tickets cost 10 euros.
- Tesla Centre, Smiljan: closed Mondays and on holidays, with shorter hours from 1 November to 31 March (Tuesday to Saturday 08:00 to 15:00, Sunday 10:00 to 15:00). The transformer demonstration starts on the hour, and an adult ticket costs 10 euros.
- Senj: a coastal town to wander, with Nehaj Fortress above it. Hours and ticket price for the fortress: check with the town museum.
Spring and autumn
April, May and October are cheaper than summer at Plitvice, with an adult day ticket at 23 euros. Northern Velebit National Park usually opens in early May and closes in mid-November, depending on snow, so late spring and early autumn fit hiking on the Premuzic Trail, which runs 42.6 km from Zavizan to Baske Ostarije.
Summer
Plitvice tickets cost 40 euros from June to September, falling to 25 euros after 16:00 (after 15:00 in September). That is also the season for rowing on Lake Kozjak, hiring a boat at the P1 dock for 15 euros per hour, and for the Zrće beach clubs on Pag, 2.5 km from Novalja. The clubs on the beach are Papaya, Aquarius, Kalypso, LIFT, Symbol and Nomad. Zavratnica Cove is a walk from Jablanac, with entry at 5 euros per person.
Park rules to know
- Swimming is banned everywhere in Plitvice.
- Stay on marked paths. UK travel advice mentions unexploded mines in remote parts of Plitvice and says not to walk on uncultivated land.
- Dogs must be on a leash, and fishing, camping, fires and drones are banned in the park.
- Cycling is allowed only on the state roads D1, D42 and D52 and on marked trails in the edge municipalities of Plitvicka Jezera and Rakovica.
Getting there
The main roads are the A1 motorway, the D1 through Korenica and the D8 along the coast. Pag is reached by the Jadrolinija ferry from Prizna to Zigljen, which takes about 20 minutes. Sailings can be cancelled in strong bura, and the D8 can restrict or stop high-sided vehicles and motorcycles, so check HAK and DHMZ before driving.
