Things to Do in Walvis Bay by Time of Day
The easiest way to plan Walvis Bay is by time of day. Mornings are for the water, middays are for the lagoon and lunch, and late afternoons are for the dunes when the sand has cooled. The town sits on Namibia’s central coast, with Swakopmund to the north, and the Atlantic here is cold all year. Costs are in Namibian dollars (N$), which trade one to one with the South African rand.

Morning on the water
Two outings leave early. Pelican Point Kayaking picks up at 08:00, drives about 45 km along the lagoon and past the salt works, then paddles by the seal colony. It states that no experience is needed and sets no minimum age. Catamaran cruises from the Waterfront on Atlantic Street leave at about 09:00 and often serve oysters and sparkling wine. On both, seals and pelicans can come close; keep your distance and leave them unfed. Dolphins are regular, and whales appear about July to November without any guarantee.
Midday on the lagoon
When the boats are back, walk the flat shoreline at Esplanade Park, where tens of thousands of flamingos feed. The Walvis Bay Wetland is a Ramsar site, and its record is at rsis.ramsar.org . The lagoon is a shallow, cold mudflat, so keep out of the water.
Afternoon in the dunes
Dune 7 is about 10 km east of town and roughly 380 to 388 m high. The sand is very hot by midday, so save the climb for later in the day, wear closed shoes and expect an entry fee that differs by nationality and age. Quad bikes and sandboards are offered by licensed operators, and quads must stay in the marked corridors by Dune 7, Langstrand and Dolfynstrand.
Sandwich Harbour
Sandwich Harbour is about 55 km south and has been open only with a registered operator since 1 April 2026. Departure times depend on the tide, so the operator decides the day’s route. Ministry park fees from that date are N$50 for a Namibian adult, N$100 for a SADC adult and N$150 for other foreign adults, and operator charges may come on top. Fees can change. See sandwich-harbour.com for its tours.
Wind sports
Kitesurfing and windsurfing happen on the lagoon, with Namibia Kite Center and others listed. The water is cold and wind builds in the afternoon, so beginners should book lessons.
