Stepantsminda Hikes, Valleys and Waterfalls
Advisory as of October 2026: The UK Foreign Office (FCDO ) warns against all travel to Russian-occupied South Ossetia and Abkhazia, and against all but essential travel close to their administrative boundary lines. For Georgia overall the US State Department gives Level 1, and for the two occupied regions Level 4 (Do Not Travel). Truso Valley runs near South Ossetia: keep to the marked track, bring your passport and do not head toward the boundary. Mountain rescue in Georgia can be slow, so book a guide for any glacier or summit route.
Stepantsminda, formerly Kazbegi, is a mountain town of roughly 1,300 people at 1,740 m on the Georgian Military Highway. The activities below are sorted by how much effort they ask for. All costs are in Georgian lari (GEL), and cash is the norm for minibuses, drivers and guesthouses.
Short and easy
- Small Gveleti waterfall. About 7 km north of town. The small fall is 10 to 15 minutes on foot from the fork in the trail, over rocky ground.
- Gergeti Trinity Church by Delica. A paved road climbs to the church at 2,170 m. Shared 4x4 vans leave the main square for about 15 to 25 GEL a head or 60 to 100 GEL a vehicle. Landslides sometimes close the road.
Half day
- Big Gveleti waterfall. The fall is about 30 m high, with 15 to 45 minutes of walking depending on your start and a scramble over rocky steps at the end. Plan 1.5 to 3 hours in total.
- Gergeti church on foot. About 6 to 7 km return, 450 to 520 m of climbing, 1 to 1.5 hours up and 3 to 4 hours for the full outing. Snow and ice make it slippery from November to February.
Full day
- Truso Valley. A dirt road of about 15 to 18 km via Kobi and Kvemo Okrokana leads to a flat track and on to Zakagori Fortress, roughly 18 to 22 km return in 4 to 6 hours. The valley has orange mineral terraces and cold carbonated springs. A shuttle runs for about 45 to 50 GEL in some seasons, and a taxi costs about 90 GEL.
- Juta and Chaukhi Lake. Juta (about 2,200 m) lies 20 to 24 km away. The last 2.6 km of road is reported closed to vehicles after a collapse in June 2025, so expect an extra 40 minutes on foot. The lake, an artificial reservoir, is about 13 km return from the roadblock and takes 6.5 hours with breaks.
Needs a certified professional
- Tandem paragliding. Flights are listed at Stepantsminda from Dedaena Peak and at Gudauri. They depend on the weather, and each operator sets its own price.
- Mount Kazbek (5,054 m). A guided mountaineering climb needing crampons, ice axe, harness, rope and a helmet. See multi-day trips .
Rules that matter on these outings
Gergeti Trinity Church is an active church. Shoulders and knees are covered for everyone, women also cover their hair and wear a long skirt, and men remove hats and wear long trousers. Scarves, aprons and wraps are at the door, photography inside is banned and so are drones.
In Truso Valley, the track ends at Zakagori Fortress, where Georgian border guards are posted. Carry your passport and be ready to say where you are from. Beyond the fortress, the villages above it and Kelitsadi Lake may need a free border-zone permit, so ask a Stepantsminda operator or the border police first. Never walk toward the boundary line.
Streams and lakes around Juta and the Chaukhi range are glacial. Keep out of the water.
Getting around
Tbilisi is 155 to 157 km away and 3 to 3.5 hours by road. Didube marshrutkas leave when full and cost about 15 GEL; returns leave Stepantsminda’s main square hourly from roughly 07:00 to 17:00. In winter the Jvari Pass (2,379 m) can close in snow, mainly December to March, so check the road on the day.
