San Salvador Day Trip Ideas
Pick a day trip by what you most want to see. Everything below starts from the city centre, and the distances are approximate. Because the state of exception declared in 2022 is still in force, bring a copy of your passport photo page and expect police to check ID at times. Official taxis, ride-hailing and organised tours are the safer ways to travel, and FCDO advises against public buses.
For ruins: Joya de Cerén, San Andrés and Tazumal
Joya de Cerén, about 36 km from the city, is a UNESCO site. Ash from the Loma Caldera eruption of about 600 CE covered the village. Visits are possible Tuesday to Sunday from 09:00 to 16:00, and the site is shut on Monday. Foreign visitors pay $10, Central Americans $3 and Salvadorans $1.
San Andrés lies about 32 to 35 km from the city and keeps the same Tuesday to Sunday timetable. Expect a foreigner fee of about $3 to $5.
Tazumal and Casa Blanca are both in Chalchuapa, about 80 km west. They share the Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00 to 16:00 timetable, and foreigners pay around $5 at Tazumal. Casa Blanca includes a small museum. Count on a long day for this pair, or join a Maya route tour that links all three sites. Fees are listed in the elsalvador.com Chalchuapa article .
For food and scenery: Ruta de las Flores
The Ruta de las Flores follows about 32 to 36 km of road. Juayúa is the usual starting point, around 85 km west and 2 to 3 hours away. On Saturday and Sunday its main plaza hosts a food fair. Ataco and Apaneca can be added the same day if you set out early.
For boats: Lake Ilopango
The lake is about 16 km east of the city. Operators sell boat rides, kayaking and diving. A half-hour boat ride cost about $15 in 2023. A tourist boat capsized in 2022, and drownings have been reported, so use a licensed operator, wear the life jacket you are given and stay out of the water.
For surf and sunsets: El Tunco and La Libertad
These Pacific beaches are 35 to 45 km south of the city. Rip currents are strong at El Tunco, and the US Embassy warned in 2021 of several drownings on Salvadoran beaches. Lifeguards are few. FCDO lists La Bocana de San Diego as the most dangerous stretch. If you do not surf, stay out of the water. If you do, learn through a surf school.
