Wieliczka Activity Guide for First Time Visitors
First-time visitors to Wieliczka usually ask the same question: how much time does it take? The answer depends on which parts of the town you pick. Below, the options are grouped by how many hours you have, followed by the rules that affect every plan.
If you have 3 hours
Do the Tourist Route in the Wieliczka Salt Mine and nothing else. The guided walk starts at the Daniłowicz Shaft, covers about 3.5 km and takes 2 to 3 hours, including the Kraków Saltworks Museum’s underground exhibition on Level III. You descend about 380 steps to Level I, at 64 m, and reach 135 m at the lowest point. A lift returns you to the surface. The route passes brine lakes and the Chapel of St Kinga, a chapel carved from salt at about 101 m.
If you have a full day
Add the surface sights after the mine:
- the Graduation Tower in St Kinga Park, a 3,200-square-metre blackthorn wall of brine with a 22.5 m viewing tower, 10 PLN to enter;
- the Upper Market Square and its painted 3D salt shaft;
- the wooden Church of St Sebastian with its Art Nouveau murals.
The whole surface circuit fits within a 15-minute walk. The walking tours page has the order.
If you want something more physical
The Miners’ Route starts at the Regis Shaft and runs about 1.9 km to a depth of 101 m. Visitors wear a helmet and carry a lamp, with a carbon-monoxide absorber supplied, and join a group of at most 20. The minimum age is 10. The route runs in Polish and English, and the temperature is 14 to 16°C. You need closed shoes that cover the whole foot.
If it rains
Solne Miasto, the recreation centre at ulica Kościuszki 15, has a full-size indoor pool, four kinds of sauna, a gym, a climbing wall and a cinema. Details are on solnemiasto.eu . The mine itself is a covered option too, since the underground temperature stays between 17 and 18°C on the Tourist Route in every season.
What the health resort is
The underground health resort at 135 m treats chronic respiratory conditions such as asthma through salt-saturated air. It runs treatment stays and a one-night programme called Zdrowy Sen. This is a medical service, so it is not a general attraction, and it is booked through the resort.
Rules that apply to every plan
- Every mine route is guided. You buy an individual ticket and join a group; you cannot walk the galleries on your own.
- Bags must be no larger than 20 x 20 x 35 cm. The Górnik building has free luggage storage during opening hours.
- Prices vary with route, language and season. Adult tickets begin around 119 PLN and reduced ones around 93 PLN, and family tickets begin around 294 PLN. The mine’s Tourist Route page shows the current list.
- Tickets are slot-based and can sell out in peak season, so buy early at bilety.kopalnia.pl .
- Tours in German, French, Italian, Russian, Spanish and Ukrainian need an online ticket.
Getting there
Take the SKA train from Kraków Główny to Wieliczka Rynek-Kopalnia, about 20 to 25 minutes, and walk a few minutes to the mine. Another option is bus 304 from the stop near Galeria Krakowska. Wieliczka is in tariff zone II, so buy a combined ticket for zones I and II.
