Where to Go for a Day From Walvis Bay
From Walvis Bay you can reach a seal reserve, a protected harbour, a moonlike desert landscape and a second coastal town in a single day. The trick is picking the right one for your energy and your vehicle. The table orders them by distance, and the sections after it give the practical details. Costs are in Namibian dollars (N$), tied one to one to the South African rand.
| Destination | Distance | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Swakopmund | 30 to 35 km north | Museum, jetty, Living Desert |
| Sandwich Harbour | About 55 km south | Dunes meeting the sea, guided 4x4 |
| Moon Landscape and Welwitschia Drive | About 30 km east of Swakopmund | Desert scenery, permit needed |
| Cape Cross | About 150 km from Walvis Bay | Seal reserve |
| Spitzkoppe | Long day, mostly gravel | A full day on gravel roads |
Swakopmund, the short hop
The paved road north takes about 30 to 35 minutes. In Swakopmund you can walk the jetty and the Mole, visit the museum and book a half-day Living Desert tour. The colonial buildings people expect from Namibia are in Swakopmund, not in Walvis Bay.
Sandwich Harbour, the signature outing
The harbour is about 55 km south, where the dunes run down into the Atlantic. Since 1 April 2026 a 25-year concession has limited access to registered operators, so a guided 4x4 tour is the only option; see sandwich-harbour.com for operator details. The tide sets the timetable. Expect a half day, with prices that typically start from roughly N$2,700 per adult. Ministry fees from 1 April 2026 are N$50 for a Namibian adult, N$100 for a SADC adult and N$150 for other foreign adults, with child rates for ages 9 to 15, and vehicle fees apply too. Fees are set by the ministry and can change. Check the Namibia park fee schedule for the current figures.
Moon Landscape and Welwitschia Drive
Both start about 30 km east of Swakopmund and require a permit, so most visitors go with a guide from Swakopmund. Entry for Dorob and Namib-Naukluft areas costs N$60 for a Namibian adult, N$180 for a SADC adult and N$280 for other foreign adults.
Cape Cross, for the seals
Cape Cross is about 150 km from Walvis Bay, or about 120 km from Swakopmund. The same fee table applies, plus N$60 for a vehicle. Stay on the paths and keep your distance from the seals.
Spitzkoppe, for a very long day
The road is mostly gravel, so start at dawn, carry spare water and fuel, and keep the day for this trip alone.
What is not a day trip
Sossusvlei and Etosha are too far for a day from the coast. Plan an overnight stay for either. Windhoek is about 390 to 400 km away, around 4 to 4.5 hours by road.
Driving notes
Drive on the left. Fog is common near the coast and often clears by midday. Fill the tank in town before heading out.
