Stepantsminda Guided Tours by 4x4 and on Foot
Advisory as of October 2026: The UK Foreign Office (FCDO ) warns against all travel to Russian-occupied South Ossetia and Abkhazia, and against all but essential travel close to their administrative boundary lines. For Georgia overall the US State Department gives Level 1, and for the two occupied regions Level 4 (Do Not Travel). Truso Valley runs near South Ossetia: keep to the marked track, bring your passport and do not head toward the boundary. Mountain rescue in Georgia can be slow, so book a guide for any glacier or summit route.
Most visitors to Stepantsminda buy at least one organised outing, whether a driver for the day, a certified guide or a pilot. This page describes what each kind of tour covers, so you can compare offers from agencies in town and online. Tour prices are set by each operator, and the figures below are local transport costs. Pay in Georgian lari (GEL), with cash for drivers.
Check before you book

Delica tour to Gergeti Trinity Church
The shortest tour is a 4x4 Delica ride up the paved road to the church at 2,170 m, which is open to visitors for free. Shared seats cost about 15 to 25 GEL, or 60 to 100 GEL for a vehicle. Walkers can take the foot trail instead, 6 to 7 km return in 3 to 4 hours. The church has dress rules: shoulders and knees covered, a long skirt and covered hair for women, no hats and long trousers for men. Wraps, scarves and aprons are at the door. Photography and video inside are banned.
Dariali, Gveleti and Gergeti in one day
Combined day tours link three northern stops. Dariali Monastery of the Archangels Michael and Gabriel, about 10 km north, was begun in 2005 and opened in part in 2011, and a visit takes 30 to 40 minutes. The Gveleti waterfalls, about 7 km north, need 1.5 to 3 hours including a rocky scramble to the 30 m big fall. Add the church for a full programme. Dress modestly at both churches, and leave drones at home near the Larsi border post.
Truso Valley with a guide
A guided trip drives about 15 to 18 km on dirt road and then walks the flat track toward Zakagori Fortress, roughly 18 to 22 km return. The valley has orange mineral terraces and cold carbonated springs. Border guards are posted at the fortress and everyone should bring a passport. A guide will know whether the free border-zone permit is needed for the villages above the fortress or Kelitsadi Lake, which is the reason to ask an operator or the border police. Stay on the marked track at all times.
Tandem paragliding
Tandem flights are listed from Dedaena Peak at Stepantsminda and at Gudauri. Choose a certified pilot. Flights depend on weather and wind, so keep a spare day.
Guided climb of Mount Kazbek
At 5,054 m, Kazbek is a glacier climb. Guided programmes take 3 to 4 days plus a weather reserve day, and some operators plan 7 to 8. They follow Gergeti and Altihut to the Bethlemi Hut (about 3,650 m), an acclimatisation walk toward 4,000 m and a summit push that begins around midnight and lasts 10 to 14 hours, climbing about 1,400 m. Crampons, ice axe, harness, rope and helmet are required. Use a certified guide. The season runs roughly from late June to September.
