Stepantsminda Day Trip Ideas and Road Notes
Advisory as of October 2026: The UK Foreign Office (FCDO ) warns against all travel to Russian-occupied South Ossetia and Abkhazia, and against all but essential travel close to their administrative boundary lines. For Georgia overall the US State Department gives Level 1, and for the two occupied regions Level 4 (Do Not Travel). Truso Valley runs near South Ossetia: keep to the marked track, bring your passport and do not head toward the boundary. Mountain rescue in Georgia can be slow, so book a guide for any glacier or summit route.
Every day trip from Stepantsminda starts on the same road, the Georgian Military Highway, or on a dirt branch off it. Road conditions decide more than distance does, so the notes come first. Pay for taxis, shuttles and marshrutkas in Georgian lari (GEL), in cash.
Road notes
- Winter. The highway over the Jvari (Cross) Pass, 2,379 m, between Gudauri and Kobi closes to all or some vehicles in snow or avalanche risk, mainly December to March. Check the day’s status with the Roads Department and the National Environmental Agency before leaving.
- Cable car. The Kobi to Gudauri cable car is a back-up when the road is shut, but it runs by season only: about 18 July to 15 September in summer 2026, then from 20 December, with maintenance closures between.
- Dirt roads. The roads to Truso and Juta are unpaved. A high-clearance 4x4, such as the local Delica vans, is the sensible vehicle.

Truso Valley
The track from the road end to Zakagori Fortress is flat and runs roughly 18 to 22 km return. Orange mineral terraces and cold carbonated springs line the valley. A shuttle costs about 45 to 50 GEL in the seasons it runs, and a taxi about 90 GEL. Georgian border guards are posted at the fortress, so carry your passport. Walking on toward the villages above it or Kelitsadi Lake may need a free border-zone permit; ask a Stepantsminda operator or the border police. This is the only common day trip near the South Ossetia boundary, so keep to the track and never approach the line.
Juta and Chaukhi Lake
After the Sno turn-off the road is unpaved. It collapsed in June 2025, and the last 2.6 km to Juta village (about 2,200 m) is reported closed to vehicles, so ask in town the day before. The walk to the village from the roadblock is about 40 minutes. The Chaukhi Lake hike, to an artificial reservoir under the Chaukhi Massif, is about 13 km return and 4.5 to 5 hours of walking. Juta’s streams are glacial, so there is no swimming.
Gveleti and Dariali
These two pair well in a half day. At Gveleti, the small fall is 10 to 15 minutes from the fork and the 30 m big fall 15 to 45 minutes, ending with a scramble. Dariali Monastery, about 10 km north near the Larsi border post, was begun in 2005 and opened in part in 2011. It is free and active, so dress modestly. Keep drones away from the border post.
From Tbilisi
Stepantsminda is 155 to 157 km from Tbilisi, 3 to 3.5 hours each way. Didube marshrutkas cost about 15 GEL and leave when full, and the hourly return from the main square runs from about 07:00 to 17:00. Ananuri fortress, about 70 km south of Stepantsminda, is a stop on the way. A same-day round trip leaves only a few hours in town, so staying a night gives more time.
