Trincomalee Day Trips to Wildlife and Ruins
What to expect from the road
Trincomalee’s inland trips are real expeditions. Roads are slow, so keep to one major destination per day and leave by 06:00 to 07:00 if you can. Remember the seasons too: the north-east monsoon, from about October or November to February or March, brings rain and rough seas to this coast, while May to September is calm.
Elephants at Kaudulla and Minneriya
The reservoirs at Kaudulla and Minneriya fill with wild elephants at certain times of year.
- Kaudulla lies about 75 km from Trincomalee, so budget about 2 hours each way.
- Minneriya’s gathering peaks from August to September.
- At Kaudulla the larger herds appear from about September or October to November or December.
- Afternoon jeep drives, roughly 14:30 to 18:30, are the standard format.
- Hundreds of elephants may gather in a good year. Sightings are not guaranteed.
- Never feed elephants or leave the jeep.
The ancient cities
Sigiriya, Dambulla and Polonnaruwa are all tiring days from the coast, with about 2.5 to 3 hours of driving each way. Choose one, or sleep a night inland.
Sigiriya is King Kashyapa’s rock fortress, reached by a climb of around 1,200 steps past the mirror wall and its painted figures. Dambulla is a cave temple with five caves of Buddha statues and painted ceilings. Polonnaruwa is a medieval capital where the rock-cut Buddhas of Gal Vihara stand among ruined palaces and stupas. Foreign visitors pay an entry fee at each site, and the amounts change, so look up the current price. Yala and Wilpattu are on the far side of the island and need their own overnight trips.
Short trips near town
Kanniya Hot Springs are about 8 km north-west of town. Seven square wells, each only 3 to 4 feet deep, are open in daytime. Most sources give the foreigner price as about LKR 50. Do not use soap or detergent.
Marble Beach is an Air Force beach, roughly 10 to 16 km from town along the Kinniya road via China Bay and Cloppenburg. Bring your passport for the gate, and expect a small charge of LKR 20 to LKR 100.
Pigeon Island is a boat trip from Nilaveli, about 14 km north. It is open in the calm months, about May to September.
Whale watching runs at dawn from about March or April to August or September, and takes 5 to 6 hours.
Arranging the day
A car with a driver is the easiest way to reach the inland sites. Agree the price, the stops and the return time first. Pack water, sun protection and rupee notes. Look at current government travel advice before you travel, and stay on established roads and paths.
