Trincomalee for Couples by Land and Sea
Why couples like it here
Trincomalee has quiet beaches, calm early mornings and cliff views. The coast faces east, so the day starts with sunrise over the water. Visit between about May and September for calm seas. During the north-east monsoon, roughly October or November to February or March, the water turns rough.
Mornings
Nilaveli beach at dawn. Nilaveli is about 14 km north of town and is the quieter, wider beach, with resorts spread along it. A walk along the sand at sunrise needs nothing booked. Uppuveli, about 5 to 6 km north of town, has a livelier cluster of guesthouses and small cafes. Ask your hotel about swimming, because dangerous surf and rip tides appear at some times of year.
A whale boat at first light. Departures are around 06:00 to 06:30, and the boats go roughly 8 nautical miles east. Boats operate from about March or April until August or September. Trinco Blu by Cinnamon offers trips with in-house naturalists. Whales are not promised, yet the calm early sea is memorable even without them. Choose a boat that turns off its engine near animals.
Afternoons
Pigeon Island snorkelling. Boats cross from Nilaveli beach in about 10 to 15 minutes. Two charges apply, a park ticket and a boat fare, and both vary, so ask first. The reef is protected: stay off the coral and keep your hands off the sharks, turtles and fish. The island is closed during the monsoon.
Marble Beach. Roughly 10 to 16 km from town, this Air Force beach needs a passport at the gate and charges a small fee, reported at LKR 20 to LKR 100. The water is calm for most of the day, and it is a pleasant place for a quiet swim.
Evenings
Walk the road through Fort Frederick as the light softens. Spotted deer graze beside it. Please do not feed them. The road ends at Swami Rock, where the cliff viewpoint called Lover’s Leap looks across the bay, named for a local legend about a Dutch official’s daughter. The rock also holds an active Hindu shrine, so keep voices low, cover your shoulders and knees, and follow the photography signs. Some of the fort is military ground.
Where to stay
Nilaveli and Uppuveli hold most of the beach hotels and guesthouses. Nilaveli Beach Hotel, Anilana and Trinco Blu by Cinnamon are among the names, so check current status before you book. A beachfront room lets you watch the sunrise without leaving your balcony. If you want a dinner on the sand, ask your hotel what it can arrange.
