Trincomalee Boat Trips and Guided Visits
How guided visits work here
There is no tourist bus loop in Trincomalee. Tours are small and informal: boat captains at Nilaveli, jeep drivers heading to the elephant parks, and tuk-tuk drivers who double as guides. Fix the price, the length of the trip and the pickup point before you agree.
Pigeon Island by boat
The island is a marine national park managed by the Department of Wildlife Conservation. Boats leave from Nilaveli beach and cross in about 10 to 15 minutes. There are two separate payments, the park ticket and the boat fare. Rates for foreign visitors differ from local rates, children pay roughly half, and prices rise from year to year. Ask for each figure and compare any bundled package with the separate prices. On the island itself there are no shops.
Park rules are simple. Do not stand on or touch coral. Do not chase, grab or feed sharks, turtles or fish. Take your rubbish with you and follow the guide. The monsoon closes the island, so go in the calm months of about May to September.
Whale watching
Departures are at dawn, about 06:00 to 06:30. The whales feed about 8 nautical miles out, which is roughly 30 minutes by boat, and the trip can last 5 to 6 hours. The season runs from about March or April to August or September, and April to July is busiest. Both Trinco Blu by Cinnamon and Pigeon Island Tours run whale or snorkel trips. A good operator keeps engines off close to the animals. Sightings are never guaranteed, and dolphins turn up far more often than whales.
Temple, fort and museum visits
- Koneswaram Kovil. An active Hindu shrine on Swami Rock. Entry is free, shoulders and knees must be covered, shoes come off, and photography is restricted near the sanctum.
- Fort Frederick. The approach road to the temple. It is free, part is military ground, and the spotted deer must not be fed.
- Hoods Tower Museum. The Sri Lanka Navy runs it at Ostenburg, within the Navy Dockyard. Some displays are in Second World War casemates, along with captured Sea Tiger boats. Entry depends on Navy security, so ask first.
Elephants inland
Jeep trips to Minneriya and Kaudulla leave in the afternoon. Minneriya is best from August to September and Kaudulla from about September or October to November or December. Allow about 2 hours each way. Hundreds of elephants may gather in a good year, but nothing is certain.
Choosing a guide
Ask how many people share the boat or jeep, whether lifejackets are carried, and which park fees are included. Pay only the agreed amount, and keep some cash in rupees for small costs.
