Trincomalee Activities on Land and Sea
A quick orientation
Trincomalee is the capital of Sri Lanka’s Eastern Province, built around a deep natural harbour. The beaches are north of town: Uppuveli is about 5 to 6 km away and Nilaveli about 14 km. Nilaveli is the quieter, wider stretch and the departure point for boats to Pigeon Island. Most activities fall into three groups, sea, shrines and forts, and wildlife inland.
When the sea is open
The east coast gets its rough weather when the south-west beaches are dry. From roughly October or November to February or March the north-east monsoon brings heavy surf, and Pigeon Island is closed to visitors. The best sea months are about May to September, though some guides begin in April and finish in October. Plan snorkelling, diving and boat trips for those months, and ask your hotel about swimming conditions on any given day. Beaches here can have dangerous surf and rip tides.
Sea activities
Whale and dolphin trips. Boats run from about March or April to August or September, with April to July the usual peak. They leave around 06:00 to 06:30 and travel about 8 nautical miles east, which takes roughly 30 minutes. The whole outing can last 5 to 6 hours. You may see blue whales, some sperm whales and spinner dolphins. No operator can promise whales, and dolphins are much more common. Pick a boat that cuts its engine near animals, since loud two-stroke engines disturb them. Trinco Blu by Cinnamon runs trips with its own naturalists.
Pigeon Island National Park. The reef is protected by the Department of Wildlife Conservation. Buy a park ticket and a boat ticket, which are separate charges, at the counters on Nilaveli beach. Prices vary and rise, so ask before paying. Keep off the coral, leave the sharks, turtles and fish alone, follow your guide and bring all rubbish back.
Diving. Divinguru Nilaveli is a PADI 5 Star IDC resort. Other dive centres exist around Nilaveli, so check which are operating before you book.
Shrines, forts and springs
- Koneswaram Kovil. A working Hindu shrine on Swami Rock with free entry. Dress modestly, remove your shoes and respect the photography rules near the sanctum.
- Fort Frederick. Free to enter. Deer wander the grounds, so keep your distance and never feed them. Some areas are military.
- Kanniya Hot Springs. Seven shallow stone wells about 8 km from town, with a fee of about LKR 50 for foreigners at most sources. Use no soap in the water.
- Marble Beach. An Air Force beach with an ID check at the gate, so bring your passport, and a small fee of LKR 20 to LKR 100.
Wildlife inland
Kaudulla and Minneriya reservoirs attract wild elephants. Minneriya’s gathering peaks from August to September, and Kaudulla follows from about September or October to November or December. Expect to spend about 2 hours on the road each way.
Small practical notes
Prices are in Sri Lankan rupees, and about 300 to 320 rupees buy one US dollar in 2026. Read the latest government travel advice before you go, and keep to established roads and paths.
