Planning a Long Weekend near Wieliczka
A multi-day trip centred on Wieliczka alone is thin. The town has one headline attraction, the salt mine, and a short list of surface sights, which together fill a single day. A long weekend only makes sense if you add the places around it. This page lays out a three-day outline and explains where to sleep.
Where to stay
There are two sensible bases.
In Wieliczka. Hotel Grand Sal is a 4-star hotel at Park Kingi 7, next to the mine entrance, with a spa, a sauna and a restaurant. The mine sells a combined visit and overnight package priced from about 499 to 529 PLN per person, so check the current figure. You can compare other lodging on Booking.com .
In Kraków. The SKA train runs between Kraków Główny and Wieliczka Rynek-Kopalnia in about 20 to 25 minutes, so Kraków is a workable base if you prefer a larger city around you in the evenings. The Koleje Małopolskie site has the timetable.
The underground night at 135 m, Zdrowy Sen, belongs to the health resort and is aimed at people for whom salt air is a treatment. It has 28 places in a shared chamber at 13 to 14.5°C, accepts children over 4 with an adult, sells no food underground and carries medical contraindications. It is booked through the resort at zdrowie@kopalnia.pl and is not a hotel room.
Day 1: Wieliczka
Spend the morning on the Tourist Route, a 2 to 3 hour guided walk of about 3.5 km that starts at the Daniłowicz Shaft. Eat at Karczma Górnicza underground or at Bistro Posolone by the shaft. In the afternoon visit the Graduation Tower (10 PLN, spring to autumn), the market square’s painted 3D salt shaft and the wooden Church of St Sebastian. The Saltworks Castle is closed for renovation, so view it from outside only.
Day 2: Bochnia
Bochnia’s salt mine is about 25 km to the east, a 20 to 25 minute ride by train or about 25 minutes by road. The visit has an underground train, a boat crossing for visitors aged 3 and over, and a multimedia route. Plan 3 to 4 hours depending on the route. The mine is closed on 1 November 2026, and times vary by season, so read kopalnia-bochnia.pl before you go.
Day 3: Niepołomice or Ojców
Pick one. Niepołomice, about 15 km north-east, has a 14th-century royal castle with an arcaded Renaissance courtyard and a forest of about 110 square kilometres with cycling trails. Ojców National Park is about 35 km north-west, 45 to 50 minutes by car, with a limestone gorge, Łokietek Cave, the Hercules’ Club rock and Pieskowa Skała Castle. Public transport to Ojców means changing in Kraków, so a car is more practical.

Practical notes
The złoty is the currency, not the euro. Tickets for the Wieliczka mine are best bought in advance at bilety.kopalnia.pl , since slots are limited in peak season. For Niepołomice opening times, use the castle’s website .
