Romantic Evenings and Quiet Mornings in Walvis Bay
Couples come to Walvis Bay for quiet scenery, not for a beach holiday. The sea is cold, the lagoon is a shallow mudflat that suits flamingos rather than swimmers, and the town itself is a working port. The romance lies in the light at the edges of the day, a lighthouse stay, a table over the water and a drive through the dunes. Costs are in Namibian dollars (N$), pegged one to one to the South African rand, and rand notes are accepted.
A weekend in outline
Friday evening. Walk the lagoon shore at Esplanade Park as the flamingos feed, then eat at the Waterfront. Anchors at the Jetty on Atlantic Street is listed as open from 07:30 to 22:00, and The Raft, a restaurant on stilts reached along a pier, sits over the lagoon.
Saturday morning. Take a catamaran cruise from the Waterfront, which leaves at about 09:00 and lasts 3 to 4 hours. Oysters and sparkling wine are commonly served, and expect roughly N$1,200 to 1,500 per adult. Seals, pelicans and dolphins often follow the boat. Keep your distance and do not feed or touch them.
Saturday late afternoon. Join a golden-hour tour at Sandwich Harbour. Mola Mola Safaris lists a Golden Hour half day, and Sandwich Harbour 4x4 runs a sunset photography excursion. The harbour is about 55 km south and opens to visitors only with a registered operator, which has been the rule since 1 April 2026. The tide sets the route. A half day typically costs roughly N$2,700 per adult, and ministry fees are separate. A sparkling-wine dune picnic is something an operator may include, so ask.
Sunday. Sleep in, then have a late breakfast. If the wind is down, walk the shore again before you leave.
A night beside the lighthouse
For a special night, Pelican Point Lodge offers nine to ten suites next to the lighthouse, about 32 km from town. Transfers to the lodge are by 4x4, or you can self-drive with an escort. Ask for rates, and bring warm clothes, because the wind comes straight off the Atlantic.
A private beach braai
Mola Mola Safaris lists a beach braai at Pelican Point as a private add-on. Ask what the package includes, because the sandspit is remote and the timing depends on the tide.
Practical tips
- Fog is common and usually clears by midday, so save outdoor dinners for clear evenings.
- Do not swim at the local beaches; the Atlantic is cold with rip currents.
- Drive on the left.
- Swakopmund, 30 to 35 km north, adds the jetty and the Mole if you want a second town.
