Romantic Escapes With Kazbek Views
Advisory as of October 2026: The UK Foreign Office (FCDO ) warns against all travel to Russian-occupied South Ossetia and Abkhazia, and against all but essential travel close to their administrative boundary lines. For Georgia overall the US State Department gives Level 1, and for the two occupied regions Level 4 (Do Not Travel). Truso Valley runs near South Ossetia: keep to the marked track, bring your passport and do not head toward the boundary. Mountain rescue in Georgia can be slow, so book a guide for any glacier or summit route.
A romantic trip to Stepantsminda is quiet and scenic. This is a mountain town of about 1,300 people at 1,740 m, so the pleasures are a view of Mount Kazbek, fresh air, a warm room and mountain cooking. Vineyards, wine festivals and hot springs are not part of the picture: wine country lies in Kakheti, and the only springs nearby are cold and carbonated, in Truso Valley. Streams and lakes in the area are glacial, so water is for looking at. Prices are in Georgian lari (GEL).
A two day outline for couples
Day 1: arrive and settle in. Drive or take a marshrutka from Tbilisi, 155 to 157 km and 3 to 3.5 hours away, and check in. Spend the late afternoon walking the town centre. Dinner can be khinkali, the Khevi mountain dumplings: bite a small hole, sip the broth, eat the dumpling and leave the knob of dough. Try khabizgina, a mountain khachapuri filled with cheese and mashed potato, as well.
Day 2: the ridge. Take the paved road or the foot trail to Gergeti Trinity Church at 2,170 m. On foot it is 6 to 7 km return, with 450 to 520 m of climbing; shared Delicas cost about 15 to 25 GEL a head or 60 to 100 GEL a vehicle. The church is a symbol of Georgia, standing against the snowy cone of Kazbek. It keeps visiting hours of about 09:00 to 17:00, so the early and late light is best enjoyed from the ridge outside. Free entry, and dress rules apply: shoulders and knees covered, hair covered and a long skirt for women, no hats and long trousers for men. Wraps and scarves are lent at the door. No photography inside.
Where to stay
Rooms Hotel Kazbegi, 1 V. Gorgasali Street, is listed with an indoor pool and a terrace. Check dates and rates on Booking.com . The alternative is a guesthouse in Gergeti village, on the far side of the Tergi river from the centre, with a view of Kazbek. Pay guesthouses in cash.
Horse rides
Riding in the Sno or Juta valleys is available through local operators, so ask your host to arrange it a day ahead. Operators and seasons vary. The final 2.6 km of road to Juta has been reported closed to vehicles since a collapse in June 2025, so check before heading there.
Practical notes
Snow and ice make the Gergeti trail slippery from November to February, and winter driving depends on the Jvari Pass (2,379 m), which closes in heavy snow, mainly December to March. Landslides can also close the paved road to the church.
