Lunar Rainbow, Boma Dinner and Game Drive Tours
The tours below are arranged through a day at Victoria Falls Town, from an early wildlife drive to a moonlit rainbow after dark. Each one adds something you would miss on your own, such as a guide, a vehicle or access outside normal hours.
Early morning: Zambezi National Park game drive
Zambezi National Park runs upriver from town and covers about 560 square km. Operators run open 4x4 drives in the early morning and again in the late afternoon. Guests commonly see elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra and sable antelope, and sometimes lion, leopard and hyena. International visitors pay a US$17 park fee for the day. The rainforest at the falls has no game drives, so this park is the place to go for wildlife nearby.
Midday: the bridge catwalk
Shearwater offers a guided catwalk tour under the deck of the Victoria Falls Bridge. Guests are clipped by harness to a cable while a guide describes the bridge’s construction. The structure was completed in 1905 and sits about 111 m above the river. Ask Shearwater for the current price.
Evening: the Boma dinner and drum show
The Boma is part of Victoria Falls Safari Lodge, not a Shearwater venue. Dinner and the show run in the evening only, from about 19:00 to 22:00. The menu features traditional Zimbabwean dishes and game meats, including crocodile and kudu, with sadza on the side. Diners who try a fried mopane worm are given a certificate, and every guest receives a drum to join in the drumming. Bundled prices range from about US$40 to US$120, depending on whether transfers and drinks are included. Reserve through Victoria Falls Safari Lodge , because the evening sells out in the high season.
Night: lunar rainbow viewing
On the full moon night and the nights either side of it, ZimParks opens Victoria Falls National Park for night viewing. International visitors pay about US$116 per person, and the VIP gate costs US$174. Moonlight in the spray produces a silver rainbow across the gorge. For photographs, bring a tripod, expect exposures of 5 to 15 seconds and keep your lens dry. Current dates and arrangements are on the ZimParks website .
Choosing a good tour
- Look for a clear list of what the price covers, including park levies and transfers.
- Pick vehicle game drives or guided bush walks for animals. Elephant-back rides and lion walks are not sold by responsible operators.
- Wild Horizons offers a non-riding Elephant Encounter at its sanctuary, with a US$24 ZimParks levy.
- Arrange transport home from evening and night tours. Elephants, buffalo and hippos move through town after dark.
