Gergeti, Dariali and Gveleti Sightseeing
Advisory as of October 2026: The UK Foreign Office (FCDO ) warns against all travel to Russian-occupied South Ossetia and Abkhazia, and against all but essential travel close to their administrative boundary lines. For Georgia overall the US State Department gives Level 1, and for the two occupied regions Level 4 (Do Not Travel). Truso Valley runs near South Ossetia: keep to the marked track, bring your passport and do not head toward the boundary. Mountain rescue in Georgia can be slow, so book a guide for any glacier or summit route.
Sightseeing around Stepantsminda means a handful of landmarks within a short drive, set against the glaciers of Mount Kazbek. This page lists them by direction from the main square. Costs are in Georgian lari (GEL); keep some cash for taxis and entrance tickets.
West: Gergeti Trinity Church
On a ridge at 2,170 m above Gergeti village, the 14th-century Gergeti Trinity Church looks straight at Kazbek. Visitors arrive by Delica on the paved road, for about 15 to 25 GEL a head or 60 to 100 GEL a vehicle, or hike about 6 to 7 km return in 3 to 4 hours. Entry is free. This is an active place of worship and should be treated as one: speak quietly, cover shoulders and knees, women cover their hair and wear a long skirt, men remove hats and wear long trousers. Scarves, aprons and wraps are provided at the door. Photography and video inside, and drones outside, are not allowed. Landslides occasionally damage the road.
North: Gveleti falls and Dariali Gorge
Roughly 7 km north of town is the start of the Gveleti trail. Big Gveleti is about 30 m high, with the two falls about 750 m apart. The small one lies 10 to 15 minutes from the fork. The big one takes 15 to 45 minutes depending on your start, finishing with a scramble up rocky steps. Plan 1.5 to 3 hours.
Farther north, about 10 km from town, the highway runs through Dariali Gorge. The Monastery of the Archangels Michael and Gabriel sits near the Larsi border, began construction in 2005 and opened in part in 2011. Visits take 30 to 40 minutes, entry is free, and modest dress is expected. Larsi is a live international border crossing, so drones should stay in the bag.
South-east: the Sno valley stone heads
The road into the Sno valley passes carved stone heads made by the sculptor Merab Piranishvili. They sit beside the road, and they make a quick stop on the way to Juta. Ask your driver for the distance from town.
In town: the Kazbegi Museum
The Alexander Kazbegi house museum is at Kazbegi Street 2. Opening hours listed are Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 17:30, with a 5 GEL ticket, though it has been reported as temporarily closed, so check before you go.
South-west: Truso Valley
The track to Zakagori Fortress is about 18 to 22 km return. Mineral terraces in shades of orange and white line the valley. Georgian border guards are posted at the fortress. Carry your passport, stay on the track and keep away from the boundary line.
A tip for the road in
If you arrive from Tbilisi, Ananuri fortress is about 70 km south of Stepantsminda and makes a stop on the way. Total driving is 3 to 3.5 hours.
