Udawalawe Day Trip Ideas by Car
Few visitors stay in Udawalawe for more than a night or two, and the area has a short list of real day trips. This page lists the ones that work, and marks the ones that are better treated as a leg of a longer route. All journey times are by private car and approximate.
Trips that work
Yala National Park (via Tissamaharama). Tissamaharama is about 71 km away, 1.5 to 2 hours. Because it is the usual Yala base, many people drive there as the next stop instead of coming back. Yala closes blocks for dry-weather rest, and Blocks 1 and 2 were closed from 14 September to 15 October 2026. Check with the Department of Wildlife Conservation before you book.
Bundala National Park. Near Hambantota, with the entrance about 18 km east of the town. Bundala is a Ramsar wetland (1991) and a UNESCO biosphere reserve (2005). Waterbirds are best from September to March, and flamingo numbers vary. Allow roughly 2 hours from Udawalawe and confirm with your driver. Fees and hours differ by source.
Kataragama. About 16 km past Tissamaharama and roughly 90 km from Udawalawe. Buddhists, Hindus and Muslims all hold it sacred, and Vedda people visit too. The Kataragama Devalaya and the Kiri Vehera stupa are the main sites. Be respectful: modest clothing, no shoes in the shrine areas and a quiet voice. Ask locally about the evening puja.
Buduruwagala. Rock carvings near Wellawaya, about 5 to 9 km from town on the Wellawaya to Thanamalwila road, usually dated to the 10th century. It is a good stop on a drive toward Ella.
Trips that do not work as day trips
- Ella. About 100 km and 2.5 hours each way. Make it a one-way transfer, with a stop at Buduruwagala or Ravana Falls (about 5 km from Ella, commonly given as 25 m high). No through train from Kandy to Ella is running at present, while Nanu Oya to Ella to Badulla is. Check railway.gov.lk.
- Galle. About 130 km and 3 hours each way.
- Mirissa. About 110 km and 2 to 3 hours each way. Whale watching there runs from November to April.
Make the most of the morning
Take the dawn jeep safari first and leave for a trip after lunch. Sleeping in the park is not allowed, so base yourself in Udawalawe town or a lodge nearby.
