Uruguay Couples Route: Ferry, Sunset, Beach
It starts with a boat
The most romantic way into Uruguay is the river crossing from Buenos Aires. Colonia Express reaches Colonia in about an hour from the Dársena Sur terminal, while Buquebus and its Seacat service take about 1h15 from Puerto Madero. Fares vary by class and date, and you check in with your passport, so look at Colonia Express when you plan. Three stops are worth building a trip around.
Stop one: Colonia
Spend the first night in the Barrio Histórico, where Portuguese and Spanish lanes meet at Calle de los Suspiros and the Portón de Campo drawbridge. The quarter has been a UNESCO site since 1995. Stay for the evening at the old pier, and climb the lighthouse in the morning (the Faro de Colonia charges a small entry fee). For rooms, see Colonia options on Booking.com .
Stop two: Punta Ballena
From Colonia, take a coach to Montevideo and another to Punta Ballena, or pick a rental car. Casapueblo holds its Ceremonia al Sol each day at sunset, and entry is UYU 600, with arrival 40 minutes early recommended. The official site lists current opening details. Nearby Punta del Este has La Mano on Playa Brava for a beach stroll.
Stop three: José Ignacio
José Ignacio is a low-rise Atlantic village and the quietest of the three. La Huella is a seasonal beach restaurant there. Many inns open only in summer or run reduced hours in winter, so plan this stop for December to February.
Why three stops
Uruguay’s couples’ options are a short list, and the plan works because of that: three towns, three evenings and plenty of unscheduled time together.
Eating well
Dinner is a parrilla affair in Uruguay, built around grilled beef and a glass of Tannat, the national red grape. Canelones has family wineries north of Montevideo if you want a tasting on the way, and Bouza and Juanicó are separate estates that take their own bookings. Card payments make restaurant meals cheaper, as the next section explains.
Money and timing
A bare “$” on a menu means pesos, at about 40 UYU to US$1. Card payments at restaurants get a 9-point VAT cut, from 22% to about 13%, until April 2027, and hotels charge non-residents 0% VAT with foreign ID. Summer, December to February, is the high season, and winter, June to August, closes many coastal places and cools the beaches. For a time budget, the Uruguay 3-day itinerary fits this route.
Tip: reserve the Colonia night first, then fit the other two around ferry and coach times.
