Vancouver Activities Sorted by Weather and Budget
Rain changes the plan in Vancouver more often than the calendar does, so it helps to know which activities work when the sky opens up and which only make sense on a clear day.
For a clear day
Stanley Park’s seawall is free and stretches nearly 9 kilometers around the peninsula, with rented bikes covering it faster than walking; the park’s cycling lane runs one-way counter-clockwise. North Vancouver holds the day’s bigger decisions: the Capilano Suspension Bridge Park charges around $75 to $80 CAD for an adult ticket bought online, while Lynn Canyon Park a short drive away has its own suspension bridge and rainforest trail for free. Grouse Mountain’s Skyride runs $89 CAD round trip and reaches the Refuge for Endangered Wildlife, home to the grizzly Coola, plus hiking trails that only make sense once the clouds lift.
For a wet one
Science World at False Creek keeps its exhibits indoors and adds an OMNIMAX film for around $7 to $10 CAD extra. The Museum of Anthropology at UBC charges $26 CAD for adults, drops to half price after 5pm on Thursday evenings, and stays open daily except Mondays between mid-October and mid-May, so a grey afternoon there rarely goes to waste. Granville Island’s covered market halls stay dry and free to browse even in a downpour.
Tips for either
TransLink covers most of downtown and the North Shore for $2.85 CAD a ride on a Compass card, with a $12.55 CAD DayPass worth it once you’re making three or more trips in a day. Layered clothing matters more than an umbrella here, since wind off the harbour makes umbrellas awkward on the seawall. Checking the forecast the morning of, rather than the night before, is usually enough to decide which list above to work from, since Vancouver’s weather can shift within a few hours either way. Packing a light rain shell even on a forecast-clear day covers the gap between the two lists without carrying an umbrella you’ll only use half the time.
A combined Capilano and Grouse Mountain tour on Viator covers both North Shore stops with transport included on a clear day, and a downtown base booked through Booking.com puts Science World and the seawall within easy reach either way. For a longer list of what else fits into a Vancouver itinerary, the day trips page covers the destinations worth a full day out of the city.
