Walking in Bruges: Routes, Markets and Cobbles
Know the ground first
The centre is a car-free network of lanes with one-way traffic, so it is not fully pedestrianised. Cyclists share the lanes and have priority in marked cycle lanes. The cobbles are slippery after rain. The canal edges have no fences, so take extra care with children and when taking photos.
Route one: the core loop
Distance about 2.5 km, time 2.5 to 3 hours.
- Markt, then the Burg.
- Blinde-Ezelstraat to the Vismarkt, the fish market (Wednesday to Saturday, 08:00 to 13:30).
- Groenerei and the Rozenhoedkaai.
- The Dijver and the Bonifacius Bridge.
- The Church of Our Lady and the Sint-Janshospitaal.
- Walplein, home of De Halve Maan.
- The Begijnhof, then Minnewater.
Begin early if you can, as the centre is full from about 11:00 to 17:00. The Begijnhof opens at 07:30 and asks for silence.
Route two: the north-east loop
Distance about 3 km, time about 2 hours. Fewer visitors come this way.
- Jan van Eyckplein and the Poortersloge.
- The Spiegelrei and Spinolarei quays.
- The Sint-Anna quarter and the Adornes Estate with the Jerusalem Chapel. It is open Monday to Saturday, and it asks you not to photograph inside or to eat and drink.
- The Lace Centre at Balstraat 16. Check its hours before you plan a stop.
- The Volkskundemuseum, Balstraat 43.
- The Kruisvest ramparts and the windmills.
- The Kruispoort gate.
Markets on the route
Three markets fall on or near the loops. On Wednesday mornings the food and flower market fills the Markt, from 08:00 to 14:00. On Saturdays the general market is on ’t Zand, from 08:00 to 13:30. The fish market is open from Wednesday to Saturday, 08:00 to 13:30. See the market listing .
Footwear and weather
Shoes with grip help on the cobbles. In winter, the Begijnhof closes at 18:30, and daylight is short, so start the first loop before noon.
Places to pause
Koningin Astridpark has a pond, a fountain, a kiosk and a playground, which makes it a handy rest stop between the Markt and the north-east quays. Minnewater is a free lake park with swans, and the benches near the water are a calm place to end the first loop.
Guided options
The visitbruges.be site lists accredited guided tours. Two guide associations, the Brugse Gidsenbond and Hello Bruges, are the ones Musea Brugge refers groups to. City Tours Belgium runs a walk with a boat trip, taking about 2.5 hours at EUR 40 with a praline, by appointment, in four languages. Find the details at the tour page .
