Walking Liverpool: Georgian Streets and Mathew St
Four short walks cover most of central Liverpool, and each can be done independently or with a guided group booked through a local operator. The centre is compact, so Pier Head, Lime Street and Hope Street are 15 to 25 minutes apart on foot. Costs are in GBP.
Route 1: Mathew Street and the Cavern Quarter
Start at the Cavern Club, where adults pay about GBP 6 on the door by card. The Grapes pub is also on this street. Further along at number 23, the Liverpool Beatles Museum covers four floors and charges GBP 20 for adults, GBP 15 for concessions, GBP 8.50 for children aged 5 to 16 and GBP 50 for families. The Eleanor Rigby statue by Tommy Steele is on Stanley Street, a short walk away.
Route 2: the Georgian Quarter
Walk Rodney Street, Falkner Square and Hope Street, ending at St James Gardens beside the Anglican Cathedral. The cathedral is open daily from 10:00 to 18:00. Tower last entry is at 16:30, and the tower closes on some Sundays for bell ringing. Pause at the Philharmonic Dining Rooms at 36 Hope Street, a long-established listed pub.
Route 3: Pier Head to the Albert Dock
Begin at the Three Graces, then pass the Museum of Liverpool and the Beatles statue. The waterfront path leads on to the Royal Albert Dock. Keep in mind that the Maritime Museum and the International Slavery Museum have been closed since January 2025 and will not reopen until at least 2028. For Tate Liverpool, go to its free temporary home at RIBA North on Mann Island, open daily until 17:50.
Route 4: Bold Street and St Luke’s
The roofless shell of St Luke’s Bombed Out Church stands at the top of Bold Street, left standing after the Blitz of May 1941 as a memorial to the people killed in the raids. Entry to the garden is free. Treat it as a place for quiet reflection.
Beyond the centre
Penny Lane and Strawberry Field lie in the suburbs, and Mendips and 20 Forthlin Road can only be seen on a National Trust minibus tour. They do not fit a walking route. Take bus 76 to Strawberry Field, where the exhibition and garden tour is about GBP 12.45. The National Trust tour is GBP 37 for adults, booked in advance.
Safety on foot
- Keep clear of the Mersey’s edge, where the tides are strong.
- At Crosby Beach, stay within 50 m of the promenade and never follow the tide out to the far figures.
- Check Hilbre Island tide tables on the West Kirby noticeboard before any walk there.
