Where to Stay in the Maldives on a Budget
The Maldives runs on a one-island-one-resort model: a resort is its own private island, priced accordingly, commonly $200 a night at the mid-range and $800-1,500-plus at the luxury end. The budget version of this country is a different kind of stay entirely, guesthouses on inhabited “local islands,” a system that’s only existed since 2009 and that changes the math completely.

Male and Hulhumale: the city bases
A guesthouse room in Male puts you within walking distance of the mosques, markets and the ferry terminal, useful if a local-island trip is only part of the plan; expect roughly $30-80 a night for a basic room, breakfast sometimes included. Hulhumale, connected by the 2km Sinamale Bridge, is more spread out and reclaimed rather than historic, with its own real swimming beach and a car-free Central Park, a good base if the airport, a beach, and Male itself all need to be within easy reach.
Maafushi and Gulhi: the guesthouse islands
Maafushi, the original local-island guesthouse hub with roughly 30 guesthouses, is the budget Maldives at its most established: rooms from around $30-50 a night, a fenced bikini beach on the northern tip, and a free house reef right off the sand. It’s also the busiest of the local islands, so book ahead in the November-April dry season. Gulhi, a speedboat or ferry ride further out, is the quieter alternative, a handful of guesthouses and its own tourist beach without Maafushi’s crowds, at similar prices.
One rule applies at every guesthouse island, not just Maafushi: alcohol isn’t sold, modest dress is expected off the beach, and swimwear is only appropriate inside the designated bikini-beach zone.
