Xi’an nature spots: free and green escapes
You don’t need to leave the city to find green space in Xi’an, and most of it costs nothing. Mount Huashan is the one genuine mountain day trip on this list, and it’s also the only entry with a real price tag attached. Here’s what’s free, what’s cheap, and what to know before paying for any of it.
| Spot | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Xingqing Palace Park | Free | Tang-era ruins, lake, morning tai chi |
| Daming Palace National Heritage Park grounds | Free (CNY 60 exhibition optional) | Tang imperial city ruins |
| Big Wild Goose Pagoda North Square | Free | Musical fountain show at dusk |
| Datang Everbright City | Free | Lit-up pedestrian street, best after dark |
| City Wall loop | CNY 54 (+CNY 45 bike) | 13.7km, walkable or cyclable |
| Mount Huashan | CNY 180+ gate, cable cars extra | Full day trip, real elevation |
- Xingqing Palace Park, free. Built over the ruins of a Tang dynasty imperial residence, with a lake, gardens, and locals doing tai chi most mornings. The quietest green space on this list.
- Daming Palace National Heritage Park, free grounds. The Tang dynasty’s imperial city ruins, walkable at no cost; only the CNY 60 Danfeng Gate site museum charges admission.
- Big Wild Goose Pagoda’s North Square, free. The musical fountain show runs most evenings at dusk, and draws its own crowd separate from the pagoda’s paying visitors.
- Datang Everbright City, free. A lit-up Tang-themed pedestrian street outside the pagoda, best experienced after dark when the lights and the hanfu-photo crowds are both out.
- The City Wall loop, CNY 54. Not free, but a flat 13.7km walkable or cyclable loop (bike rental roughly CNY 45 for three hours) around the whole walled city, genuinely green in stretches along the top.
- Mount Huashan, CNY 180+ gate ticket. The one real mountain on this list, about 30 minutes from Xi’an North by high-speed rail, with cable cars and a harnessed cliff-path extra. See our hiking guide for the full cost breakdown.
Is there anything green within walking distance of the Muslim Quarter?
Not directly, the Muslim Quarter itself is dense streets and stalls, not green space. Xingqing Palace Park and the City Wall’s greener stretches are both a short metro or bike ride away rather than a walk from Huimin Jie itself.
Do you need a full day for any of these except Huashan?
No. Xingqing Palace Park, Daming Palace’s free grounds, and the Big Wild Goose Pagoda fountain show are all an hour or two each, easy to combine with a sightseeing day rather than needing their own.
Pair the free spots with Xi’an hidden gems for a few more offbeat, low-cost stops, and check Xi’an travel tips for the payment and VPN basics before you head out to any of them. One habit worth keeping: do a free park in the same day as a paid sight nearby rather than as its own separate outing, splitting them across days just adds transport cost for no real benefit.
