For the price of a ticket that currently runs around $17 (verify at visitcanaldepanama.com before you go), you can stand a few meters from a ship being lifted 26 meters between two oceans. Understanding how that actually happens is most of the reason a visit here is worth the money, so here is the mechanism first and the history behind it second.
How the locks actually work
The canal runs 82km ocean to ocean through three original lock sets built in 1914: Gatún on the Caribbean side (three chambers in a row) and Pedro Miguel plus Miraflores on the Pacific side. Each ship is raised about 26 meters to the level of Gatún Lake, a summit reservoir formed by damming the Chagres River, then lowered back down on the other side. The whole system is gravity-fed, water flows downhill from the lake to fill each chamber, no pumps involved. The electric locomotives running along the lock walls, known as mules, do not tow the ship; the vessel moves under its own engine power, the mules only keep it centered so its hull does not scrape the chamber walls. A full ocean-to-ocean transit takes 8 to 10 hours.
The French failure and the American build
Ferdinand de Lesseps, fresh off the Suez Canal, started digging a sea-level canal here in 1880 with no locks planned at all, the terrain made that design impossible and the French effort collapsed, having lost more than 22,000 workers to yellow fever, malaria, and mudslides. The United States took over construction in 1904, switched to a lock-based design, and finished in 1914; the canal opened on 15 August 1914. The precondition for finishing at all was medical, not engineering: Dr. William Gorgas ran a mosquito-control campaign that brought yellow fever and malaria under control on the isthmus, without it the American effort would likely have failed the same way the French one did.
The 1999 handover and the 2016 expansion
The Torrijos-Carter Treaties, signed 7 September 1977, set the terms for transferring the canal to Panama; the full handover happened at noon on 31 December 1999, and the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) has run it since. In 2016, a third lane opened, Agua Clara Locks on the Atlantic side and Cocolí Locks on the Pacific side, both sized for Neopanamax ships too large for the 1914 locks, roughly doubling the canal’s capacity on 26 June 2016.
A drought that is over, not an ongoing concern
Between 2023 and 2024, low water in Gatún Lake forced the canal authority to cut daily transits and restrict how deep ships could sit in the water, a real event that pushed up global shipping costs for a while. By 2025 lake levels and transit schedules were back to normal, it is worth knowing the story happened, but it has no bearing on a visit today, ticket prices and viewing hours are unaffected.
