Matara is a base more than a destination for longer stays. It has no multi-day tour programme of its own, but a rail line, an expressway and a run of beaches and temples make it easy to stay put and travel out each day. Costs are in Sri Lankan rupees (LKR), and cash helps for tuk-tuks and small shops. Read the latest UK government advice for Sri Lanka before booking.

Matara has no signed heritage trail and no regular guided walking tour, but its old quarter is compact enough to explore on your own. The route below links four stops in a loop and can be walked in a morning. The town is crowded and noisy, so expect to share narrow pavements with tuk-tuks and motorbikes. Matara suits couples who want a low-key stay on a working Sri Lankan coast, not a polished resort strip. The pleasures are small and simple: an evening by the sea, a calm swim, a slow morning on a quiet beach and one early boat trip nearby. Prices are in Sri Lankan rupees (LKR), and a little cash goes a long way for tuk-tuks and cafes. Look up current travel advice before you book.

Families can fill several easy days in Matara, provided they respect the sea and keep clear of the river. The best outings are short and cheap: a moat and a museum, a very big Buddha, a reef-sheltered beach and a temple on a tiny island. Costs are in Sri Lankan rupees (LKR), and a little cash is needed for tuk-tuks and donations. Three safety rules first Keep away from the Nilwala.

The rest take most of a day, and the wildlife parks inland are long days that should not be squeezed into a relaxed itinerary. Costs are in Sri Lankan rupees (LKR), and cash is the safe choice for tuk-tuks and small tickets. Matara does not run on a circuit of branded attraction tours. This page sets out what to ask for, what the guide can add and how to book the boat well. Costs are in Sri Lankan rupees (LKR), so keep some cash for guides and drivers.
