Matara Day Trips by Train and Expressway
Matara is a handy starting point for day trips because the coastal railway and the Southern Expressway both pass through. Only Mirissa is a short hop. The rest take most of a day, and the wildlife parks inland are long days that should not be squeezed into a relaxed itinerary. Costs are in Sri Lankan rupees (LKR), and cash is the safe choice for tuk-tuks and small tickets.
| Place | Direction and distance | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Mirissa | About 12 km west | Whale watching, harbour |
| Galle Fort | Roughly 40 km west | UNESCO fort, walking |
| Wevurukannala Vihara | About 20 to 25 km east | Temple with a giant Buddha |
| Hiriketiya | About 21 to 25 km east | Surf and a sheltered bay |
| Tangalle area | Further east | Beaches |
| Udawalawe, Yala | Long days inland | Wildlife parks |
West along the coast
Mirissa. Whale-watching boats go out from Mirissa fishing harbour at roughly 06:00 to 06:30 and stay out for 2 to 8 hours, commonly 4 to 6. November to April is the main season. Some operators also sail between August and October if the sea is calm, and boats stop in the monsoon from May to July. No trip can promise a sighting, and the 2023 to 2024 season was the weakest since 2012. By law nobody may swim, snorkel or dive with whales, and boats need a Department of Wildlife Conservation licence. Pick a boat that keeps its distance and does not chase. Check what is on offer through Viator whale-watching results . Coconut Tree Hill is another Mirissa landmark, and Sri Lanka Tourism outlines the whale-watching rules.
Galle Fort. The fort is UNESCO listed and is roughly 40 km west by road or by rail. Train time is about an hour, and Galle station is a terminus where trains reverse. The expressway section between Galle and Matara opened on 15 March 2014. Go early and walk the ramparts before the heat builds.
East along the coast
Wevurukannala Vihara. At Dickwella, this temple has a seated Buddha reported at about 160 feet and a tableau showing hell punishments. It is a different place from Weherahena, which is nearer to Matara.
Hiriketiya. The bay is a sheltered cove at Dickwella and sits outside Matara. Beginners can learn on the beach break at the western end, while the left-hand reef break suits surfers who are already confident. Shallow reef lies close to the shore. Conditions are best roughly November to April. The Surf Atlas page for Hiriketiya goes into detail.
Tangalle. Beaches near Tangalle suit a quiet day away. Ask locally about currents, and follow any flags.
Inland parks
Udawalawe and Yala each need a very early start, and a night near the park makes the trip far more pleasant. Neither is a casual outing.
Agree tuk-tuk and car fares beforehand, since fuel quotas may affect hired vehicles.
