Djerba Day Trips Starting in Midoun
Midoun is on Djerba Island, which makes it a handy start for day trips in two directions: around the island, or across to the mainland. The town is roughly 500 km by road from Tunis, so the capital and the northern ruins are well outside day-trip range.

Around the island
Houmt Souk. The main town has the Borj El Kebir fortress, the souk and the fishing port. Pair it with Mosquée Fadhloun, which stands beside the Houmt Souk to Midoun road in Khazroun. Fadhloun opens until midday only, and it is closed on Fridays.
Erriadh. This village is home to the Djerbahood murals, about 250 works by more than 150 artists. It also holds El Ghriba, an active synagogue and pilgrimage site. Respect its status: expect a security check, carry passport or ID and dress modestly. Check the hours locally before you set off. The murals are free to see.
Guellala. Pottery workshops and a hilltop museum make this a relaxed outing. Fees and hours change, so ask when you arrive.
Ras Rmel. The Flamingo Island boat trip departs from Houmt Souk’s fishing port and takes about an hour each way, with lunch aboard. Flamingos are around in the cooler months, roughly October to May, though sightings are not promised.
Crossing to the mainland
Guided 4x4 days run from Djerba toward the Tataouine region, including Chenini, Matmata and Toujane. Two routes leave the island. The El Kantara causeway is a road link. The Ajim-Jorf ferry takes about 30 minutes including transfers, runs about hourly and carries foot passengers for free.
The FCDO’s Libya-border warnings exclude Zarzis and Médenine Governorate north of the C118 road, but any itinerary should avoid Ben Guerdane, Remada and Dehiba. Ask the operator for the route and the timing. Use a licensed company.
Day-trip tips
- Start early in summer, because midday heat is strong.
- Carry some dinars in cash. The currency has three decimals.
- Keep your passport or ID with you on the mainland.
