Day 1: Cardiff arrival and the free National Museum
GWR runs direct from Paddington to Cardiff Central in about 1 hour 50 minutes to 2 hours, calling at Reading, Swindon, and Bristol Parkway on the fastest services, with Advance singles from around GBP 29 booked a few weeks out. The National Museum Cardiff sits a short walk from the station and charges nothing for its permanent art and natural history galleries, a genuine full afternoon without spending a penny past the train fare. Finish the day at Cardiff Bay, the Wales Millennium Centre’s exterior and the waterfront promenade cost nothing to walk, then check into a hostel near Central station for an early start tomorrow.
Is Cardiff Castle’s interior worth GBP 16.50 on a tight budget?
Only if the Norman Keep and the Victorian Gothic apartments genuinely interest you, otherwise skip it. The castle grounds, and the view of the keep from Bute Park next door, cost nothing at all, and on a strict two-day budget that free view covers most of what a photo from the paid side would show anyway.
Day 2: Cardiff Castle, then home
