Britain in 6 Days on a Budget (With Daily Costs)
The full spine: Cardiff overnight, a York day trip, a Liverpool day trip, then Edinburgh for two nights, finishing with the Caledonian Sleeper home so the last day needs no hotel room at all. Extends the 5-day plan with one more full day in Edinburgh. This is the longest version of this itinerary, for a shorter cut see the 2-day through 5-day versions.

Day 1: Cardiff arrival and the free National Museum
GWR runs direct from Paddington to Cardiff Central in about 2 hours, Advance singles from around GBP 29. The National Museum Cardiff is free for its permanent galleries, then a free evening wander round Cardiff Bay.
Day 2: Cardiff Castle, then home
Morning at Cardiff Castle if the GBP 16.50 ticket made the cut, otherwise Bute Park costs nothing. Afternoon train back to Paddington.
Day 3: York and the free National Railway Museum
LNER runs direct from Kings Cross to York in about 2 hours, Advance singles from around GBP 25. The National Railway Museum is free, York Minster’s exterior and the Shambles cost nothing to walk past.
Day 4: Liverpool’s free National Museums
Avanti West Coast runs direct from Euston to Liverpool Lime Street in about 2 hours 15 to 2 hours 20, Advance singles from around GBP 26. National Museums Liverpool charges nothing at any of its five Albert Dock area sites.
Day 5: Edinburgh, the overnight begins
LNER’s fastest direct trains run 4 hours 20 to 4 hours 30 from Kings Cross to Edinburgh Waverley, Advance singles from GBP 41.40 booked three or more weeks ahead. Arrive mid-afternoon, then spend the evening walking the Royal Mile and viewing Edinburgh Castle’s floodlit esplanade for free before checking into a hostel.
Day 6: The National Museum of Scotland, Arthur’s Seat, and the Sleeper home
Spend the morning at the National Museum of Scotland, free permanent admission, on Chambers Street. In the afternoon, hike Arthur’s Seat, a free extinct volcano climb with a better skyline view than most paid viewpoints in the city, or take the shorter, gentler Calton Hill instead if energy or weather is against a proper climb. In the early evening, board the Caledonian Sleeper back to London, a seated ticket runs from around GBP 50 and doubles as the night’s accommodation, arriving into Euston early the next morning with no hotel room needed at all.
Is the Caledonian Sleeper worth it over a daytime LNER train home?
For this itinerary, yes. A daytime LNER return still needs a hotel room for the extra night, while the Sleeper’s seated coach, from around GBP 50, replaces that room entirely and gets the trip home overnight instead of burning a seventh day on it. A private cabin from around GBP 170 upward is the comfort upgrade, not the budget option, book the seated coach if cost is what matters most.
Before you go
Book the Sleeper’s cheapest seated tickets as soon as the date is fixed, bookings open twelve weeks ahead and the cheapest berths go first. Swap the Liverpool day for a Lake District overnight via a change at Oxenholme, about 3 hours from Euston, if hiking the fells appeals more than a second city. Running total for the full six days, transport, entries, and the Sleeper home, lands roughly GBP 250-380 per person depending on how many extras get added.
