4 days adds a solemn day to the core plus Ghent
Days 1-3 here are the exact plan in the 3-day itinerary : the Markt and the Burg, Michelangelo and the museums, then a Ghent day trip. Day 4 adds Ypres and the Flanders Fields WWI sites, on its own day, deliberately not paired with lighter sightseeing. If 4 days is more than you need, the 3-day itinerary covers just the core plus Ghent. Most days here run 70-190 euros a person.
Book these before you go

Day 1: the Markt, the Burg, and the canals
The Markt is free to stand in, the Belfry ticketed for the 366-step climb (verify current price and hours). The Burg holds the Gothic Stadhuis (begun 1376) and the Basilica of the Holy Blood, free to enter. Walk the canals to the Rozenhoedkaai, free the whole way.

The Church of Our Lady holds Michelangelo’s Madonna and Child, the only Michelangelo work to leave Italy in his lifetime; its brick tower, 115.6m, is the third-tallest brickwork church tower in the world. The Groeningemuseum covers the Flemish Primitives. Minnewater and the Begijnhof are free, part of the separate 1998 UNESCO béguinages listing. Finish at Choco-Story, around €14 (verify).

Day 4: Ypres and Flanders Fields
Ypres (Ieper) sits roughly 1-1.5 hours from Bruges, often via a change at Kortrijk (verify current routing). This is WWI heritage, and the day deserves a soberer pace than ordinary sightseeing: the In Flanders Fields Museum, in the rebuilt Cloth Hall on Ypres’s market square, the Menin Gate, inscribed with tens of thousands of names of the missing, and its nightly Last Post ceremony at 20:00, running since 1928 and interrupted only during the German WWII occupation. Tyne Cot Cemetery, the largest Commonwealth war cemetery in the world, sits a short distance further out if you have the time. Give the evening back its own space rather than rushing into other plans.

Getting around on 4 days: what needs booking ahead
Days 1 and 2 are walkable, no transit needed. Day 3 and day 4 both run on normal NMBS/SNCB regional trains, book the Ypres connection a little ahead if your dates land on a Last Post evening you don’t want to miss. Full details are in the main Bruges guide .
Give day 4 its own emotional space rather than treating it as a stop to tick off between lighter sightseeing days.
