Cartagena in 2 Days on a Budget (With Daily Costs)

Two days: one arrival walk, one island day
Two days in Cartagena means one evening in the Old City and one full day on the water, nothing more. This plan skips Castillo San Felipe and the museum crawl entirely to protect the Rosario Islands day, the one excursion that actually justifies the trip. Book these before you go:
- A reviewed Rosario Islands boat day ; confirm the park tax is included before you pay anything.
- A Getsemani or Bocagrande room ; dry-season (Dec-Apr) dates fill fast.

Day 1: Arrival and the free Old City walk
Land at Rafael Nunez International Airport (CTG) and take the fixed-rate taxi kiosk into Getsemani or Bocagrande, roughly 20,000-30,000 COP, no haggling required. Drop your bags and walk the UNESCO-listed Old City walls while the light is soft, free the entire way, ending near Baluarte Santo Domingo for sunset; buy a street beer instead of a rooftop-bar seat for the same view. Dinner in Getsemani’s cheap eats around Plaza de la Trinidad beats anything inside the walls on price.
Day 2: Rosario Islands or Playa Blanca
This is the day the whole trip is built around. Boats leave the dock around 8-9am and return by late afternoon; a standard adult ticket runs about 159,000 COP (139,000 COP for a child), plus a separate national-park tax of roughly 25,000-29,000 COP that is not always included in the advertised price. Book a reviewed operator rather than a dock tout, since overselling and inflated on-island prices are a documented problem on this route. Is two days enough to see Cartagena?
Enough to see the free Old City and do the one excursion that matters, not enough for Castillo San Felipe, La Popa or a second day trip. Travelers with only two days should protect the Rosario Islands day above everything else; it is the one thing a rushed Cartagena trip should not skip.
Should I skip the Old City to add a second beach day instead?
No. The Old City costs nothing and takes half a day at most, so cutting it saves no real budget. If a second day trip matters more than the walls, add a third day instead of dropping the free arrival-day walk.
Pack a dry bag for the boat day. Spray, sunscreen and phones do not mix well with a speedboat’s spray on the way out to the islands.
