Day 1: Arrival and the free Old City walk
Land at CTG, take the fixed-rate kiosk taxi (roughly 20,000-30,000 COP) into Getsemani or Bocagrande, and walk the free, UNESCO-listed Old City walls into a sunset near Baluarte Santo Domingo, a street beer instead of a paid rooftop table. Dinner around Getsemani’s Plaza de la Trinidad beats Old City prices, and both areas see heavier tourist-police coverage than the national Colombia advisory alone suggests.
Day 2: Rosario Islands or Playa Blanca
The trip’s core excursion: roughly 159,000 COP per adult (139,000 COP child) for the boat, plus a separate 25,000-29,000 COP park tax that’s often left off the advertised price. Book a reviewed operator, not a dock tout, given the route’s documented overselling reputation. Colombia’s tourism board covers Baru’s beaches directly if your tour includes a Playa Blanca stop.
Day 3: El Totumo mud volcano
About 1-1.5 hours away, a bare entrance runs 20,000-25,000 COP, or 115,000-210,000 COP for an organized door-to-door tour that handles the pickup logistics for you. Budget extra for the optional massage (10,000-15,000 COP) and a customary rinse-attendant tip (5,000-10,000 COP), and go early, 8-11am, for cooler temperatures and thinner crowds.
Day 4: Bocagrande beach day
A free, walkable city beach, genuinely secondary to the islands but a no-booking rest day; a casual seafood lunch runs 25,000-45,000 COP.
Day 5: La Boquilla’s beach and mangroves
North along the coast, La Boquilla adds budget mangrove-canoe tours and kitesurf lessons at a fraction of a Rosario Islands day’s price, a real water day rather than another beach lounge.
Day 6: Getsemani, properly
Spend the day on foot: self-guided street art around Calle Sierpe and Plaza de la Trinidad (free), browsing Las Bovedas’ artisan vaults back inside the walls (free to browse), and an optional beginner salsa class in the afternoon for those who want one more paid activity before the trip winds down. Dinner and live Champeta music in Getsemani after dark is genuinely cheaper and more distinctive than a night inside the Old City walls, and by day 6 you’ll have a better feel for which side streets are worth a second look.
Day 7: Flex morning and departure
Use the morning for whatever got cut, a second Bocagrande beach hour, last-minute souvenir shopping, or simply packing, before a fixed-rate taxi (roughly 20,000-30,000 COP) back to CTG.
Is a week too long for Cartagena on a budget?
Not if you use the extra days for real water time rather than repeating the Old City. This plan spends five of seven days on the coast (Rosario Islands, El Totumo, Bocagrande, La Boquilla) precisely so the extra length buys variety, not filler; travelers who’d rather have more downtime than more excursions can drop either Bocagrande or La Boquilla and use that day for rest without breaking the rest of the spine.
Should the Getsemani deep dive move earlier in the trip?
It works better late. Getsemani rewards a slower, less rushed visit after the bigger excursions are done, and its nightlife is a natural way to close out the trip rather than compete with an early island-day wake-up call.
Getting between these seven days without a rental car
None of this route needs a car. Days 1, 4, 6 and 7 run on foot or the fixed-rate taxi kiosk system, roughly 10,000-30,000 COP depending on distance; Days 2, 3 and 5 all run through an organized boat or tour operator who handles pickup as part of the price. Uber and InDrive both operate in the same legal gray zone as Medellin, useful for short hops but not for reaching the islands, El Totumo or La Boquilla’s outer edges reliably.
How much should seven days in Cartagena cost, all in?
Excluding flights, budget roughly 1,000,000-1,700,000 COP per person across these seven days. The Rosario Islands day is the single biggest line item once the park tax lands, El Totumo and La Boquilla each add a mid-range cost depending on DIY versus a booked tour, and the arrival, Bocagrande, Getsemani and flex days all run light since none of them require a paid excursion. Layer a daily food allowance on top, and keep cash reserves for the three cash-first days (Rosario Islands, El Totumo, La Boquilla).
Reconfirm your Day 7 flight time before Day 6; Cartagena’s airport taxi kiosk is reliable, but a late-checking traveler with a morning flight has less room for error than earlier in the trip.
