3 days: the city core plus a lower-altitude Sacred Valley day
This route takes the 2-day city core and adds a full day in the Sacred Valley, both a genuinely good sight and a smart acclimatization move since Pisac and Ollantaytambo sit lower than Cusco. Expect roughly $35-55 a person per day including a bed, market meals, and transport; the tables below give it in soles with a rough dollar conversion, since PEN moves and these are worth verifying at the time. Day 1: acclimatize around the free Plaza de Armas sights
Go slow today. Cusco sits at roughly 3,400m, and altitude sickness (soroche) tends to hit on arrival; hydrate, skip alcohol, and try coca tea if you like, though rest does the real work. The Plaza de Armas is free, ringed by the Cathedral and La Compañía de Jesús. Walk to Qorikancha, the Inca Temple of the Sun built over with the Santo Domingo convent (roughly S/15, about $4), then uphill to San Blas and its free viewpoint, steep at this altitude, so take it easy.

Day 2: the ruins above town, then San Pedro Market
Buy a Boleto Turístico Partial (roughly S/70, about $19, COSITUC, cash in soles only) and use it on Sacsayhuamán (no separate ticket exists, Boleto only), Q’enqo, Puka Pukara, and Tambomachay. Stop at Cristo Blanco, free, for the view over the city. In the afternoon, wander San Pedro Market, free, for a cheap set lunch (roughly S/8-12, about $2-4) and the free Twelve-Angled Stone on the way back.

Day 3: the Sacred Valley, a lower-altitude day out
Head to Pisac, Inca ruins above a market town known for textiles and ceramics, then on to Ollantaytambo, a living Inca town with a fortress overlooking the Urubamba River and the train station most Machu Picchu trips depart from. Both sit lower than Cusco (Ollantaytambo around 2,800m), so today doubles as acclimatization if you’re continuing on to Machu Picchu later. A colectivo or a shared Sacred Valley day tour covers both towns; many Sacred Valley sites are included on the Boleto Turístico Integral, so buy that version instead of the Partial if you’re doing this route.

Getting around on 3 days
Days 1 and 2 stay walkable with a short taxi hop or two. Day 3 needs a colectivo or an organized tour out to the Sacred Valley, roughly 1-1.5 hours each way; book that ahead in peak season (May-September) rather than showing up at a colectivo stop hoping for space. Keep the pace slow through Day 1 no matter how good you feel; soroche can still catch up by evening. Check for protest or transport-strike advisories before locking in Day 3’s transport, since Sacred Valley roads have been affected in past disruptions too.
