Cairo in 2 Days on a Budget (Daily Costs)

Travel advisory: Egypt sits on the edge of the wider 2026 regional conflict involving Iran. The country is not a combatant, and Cairo, Giza, and the Nile Valley remain the normal, actively-visited tourist core, with 2026 tourism hitting record numbers. There has been limited spillover, including a July 2026 drone strike on ships at Damietta port in the north, far from any tourist site. At the time of writing the US State Department lists Egypt at Level 2 (“Exercise Increased Caution”), with “Do Not Travel” limited to the Sinai interior and the remote Western Desert, not the places in this guide. Check the current US State Department and UK FCDO advisories before booking, since the situation is fluid.
The 2-day version: Giza and Islamic Cairo core
Two days is enough for Cairo’s two headline halves: the Giza Plateau and the Grand Egyptian Museum on day one, then Islamic Cairo and a Nile felucca on day two. It’s a tight budget core, see the full Cairo budget guide for more free and cheap things if you have longer.

Day 1: Giza and the GEM
Start early at the Giza Plateau (around 700 EGP, about $14) to beat the heat and the crowds. The new visitor system routes everyone through a south-side visitor center onto free, included electric shuttle buses between the pyramids of Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure and the Sphinx; there are no private cars between the monuments anymore. Agree camel, horse, and photo prices out loud before accepting any of them, or skip them entirely, they’re a hassle rather than a danger. Spend the afternoon at the Grand Egyptian Museum (about $30 through October 2026, rising to $35 from November), fully open since November 2025 with the complete Tutankhamun collection, including the golden mask. Book your timed slot online in advance, since it sells out.
Day 2: Islamic Cairo and a Nile felucca
Morning at the Citadel of Salah El Din and the Muhammad Ali (Alabaster) Mosque inside it, a combined ticket around 180 EGP (about $3.60). Afternoon in Khan el-Khalili, free to wander, with a stop for tea at El Fishawy Café, open since 1797. Close the day with a Nile felucca sail at sunset, negotiate the price dockside, often just a few dollars for an hour.
How much does 2 days in Cairo cost?
Figure roughly $45-65 for day one, GEM ticket included, and $15-25 for day two, plus $15-40 a night for a budget room in Zamalek or Downtown. Uber or Careem between sights runs $3-7 a ride.
Book the GEM ticket online before you land, since slots do sell out, and recheck the current US State Department or UK FCDO advisory closer to your travel date.
