Luxor and Aswan in 4 days: the full overland loop
Four days covers every major day trip from Luxor without setting foot on a Nile cruise: the balloon, Dendera and Abydos, Edfu and Kom Ombo, and Aswan itself, each priced and timed from here. It builds on the 3 day plan by adding Edfu and Kom Ombo as their own overland day rather than a cruise stop.

Day 1: hot air balloon and East Bank settle-in
Pre-dawn pickup, a motorboat crossing to the West Bank airfield, then 45 to 60 minutes over the Valley of the Kings and the green Nile-side fields for $40 to $100. The 2013 crash that killed 19 people here is worth an honest mention rather than silence; a dedicated airfield, caps on simultaneous flights and extra mandatory pilot training followed, and flights are grounded outright in wind. Day 2: Dendera and Abydos, the long day
A 9 to 10 hour round trip, mostly driving. Abydos is the far end, two and a half to three hours each way via the Qena road; Dendera, about an hour out, is usually saved for the way back. Dendera’s entrance runs roughly EGP 300 adult plus small EGP 100 add-ons for the roof and crypt; Abydos carries a separate ticket in a similar range, worth confirming at the gate or on egymonuments.com . A private car and driver for the day runs EGP 1,500 to 2,500 (about $30 to $50), split between however many people are riding.
Day 3: Edfu and Kom Ombo, overland
Most visitors see Edfu’s Temple of Horus and Kom Ombo’s double temple to Sobek and Horus from a cruise deck, but a full day overland from Luxor reaches both for far less. Official 2026 entrance fees are EGP 550 adult ($11) for Edfu and EGP 450 adult ($9) for Kom Ombo; some older travel blogs still list lower stale numbers, so trust the current Ministry of Tourism figures over a cached one. The round trip runs 9 to 10 hours, mostly driving, similar in length and cost to the Dendera and Abydos day.
Day 4: Aswan by train, out and back
Three to four hours each way over roughly 215 to 230 km, fares from EGP 55 in third class up to EGP 500 for first class air conditioned, call it $1 to $10 rather than the $17 to $35 a resale booking site often quotes (seat61.com has current timetables). Philae Temple (a short motorboat ride to Agilkia Island), the Aswan High Dam and the Unfinished Obelisk fill the day.

Why drive to Edfu and Kom Ombo instead of taking a cruise?
Money and flexibility. A Nile cruise cabin covering the same two stops costs hundreds of dollars and locks you into its schedule; a day trip from Luxor costs roughly what the Dendera and Abydos day does and gets you back to your own hotel that night.
Is 4 days too rushed for this much driving?
It is a full schedule, three of four days involve several hours in a car or train, but nothing here is dangerously tight. Build in a genuinely lazy morning on the East Bank on day 1 if the pace worries you; the balloon still has you back by 9am either way.
Ask your driver on day 2 to quote Dendera and Abydos as one combined price for the car, not two separate day rates; splitting them is a common way the fare gets padded.
