Luxor and Aswan in 5 days: overland, with a night in Aswan
Five days adds breathing room the 4 day plan does not have: an overnight in Aswan instead of a same-day round trip, so Philae, the High Dam and the Unfinished Obelisk are not all crammed into one train-bookended day. Book these before you go

Day 1: hot air balloon and East Bank settle-in
Pre-dawn pickup, a motorboat crossing to the West Bank airfield, then 45 to 60 minutes over the Valley of the Kings for $40 to $100. A 2013 crash here killed 19 people, still the deadliest hot air ballooning disaster on record, and the dedicated airfield, flight caps and extra pilot training that followed are why it is regulated rather than reckless today. Day 2: Dendera and Abydos, the long day
A 9 to 10 hour round trip, mostly driving. Abydos sits two and a half to three hours each way via the Qena road; Dendera, about an hour out, is usually saved for the way back. Day 3: Edfu and Kom Ombo, overland, or the cruise instead

Day 4: Aswan, arrive and settle in

With a night here instead of rushing back, split the sightseeing across two days, starting with Philae Temple, a short motorboat ride to Agilkia Island.
Day 5: Aswan High Dam and back to Luxor
The Aswan High Dam and the Unfinished Obelisk fill the morning, then an afternoon train back to Luxor for departure or the next stop. A Nubian village visit is a common add-on here if there is an extra hour before the train.

Is an overnight in Aswan worth the extra cost?
Yes if a same-day round trip sounds exhausting. A budget guesthouse in Aswan runs a fraction of what the time saved is worth; splitting Philae and the High Dam across two mornings instead of one long day removes the worst of the rush.
Should the cruise replace day 3 instead of driving?
Only if the extra $300 to $1,500 or more buys something the overland route does not: a cabin, onboard meals and someone else handling Edfu and Kom Ombo’s logistics. On a tight budget, the overland day plus the train to Aswan covers the same three stops for far less.
