A 5-Day Djerba Itinerary on a Budget
Five days keeps the 4-day itinerary’s full run of island sights and adds the one thing that turns a beach trip into a proper Tunisia trip: a mainland day trip to Matmata and Tataouine. Djerba itself sits outside every advisory zone; the only incident worth naming is the 9 May 2023 shooting near El Ghriba Synagogue, a single, targeted event with no tourist-directed incident since, so expect routine, visible security there and nowhere else. If five days is more than you want, the 4-day drops the mainland day; if it’s not enough, the 6-day and 7-day versions add more beach and a Sahara overnight.
Book these before you go:
- Djerba hotel or resort ; verified all-inclusive chains: Radisson Blu Palace Resort & Thalasso, Iberostar Selection Eolia, Hasdrubal Prestige Thalassa
- Matmata and Tataouine day tour , prices vary by operator and group size, so compare a few before you commit
Day 1: Houmt Souk and a Beach Afternoon
Morning. Land at Djerba-Zarzis International Airport (DJE) and check in. Exchange money on arrival, the Tunisian dinar (TND) is a closed currency, and keep every receipt since only about 30% converts back when you leave.
Midday. Houmt Souk’s covered souks and fondouks, free, plus the harbor fish auction if you’re up early. Borj el-Kebir / Ghazi Mustapha Tower, about 8 TND, for the view.
Afternoon. Sidi Mahrès beach for the rest of the day, free and public.
Day 1 cost: Borj el-Kebir 8 TND, everything else free beyond food.
Day 2: El Ghriba, Djerbahood, and Guellala
Morning. El Ghriba Synagogue in Erriadh, traditionally the oldest synagogue in Africa (current building 19th-century). Dress modestly; it’s a living house of worship and a named UNESCO component, not a photo stop.
Midday. Djerbahood’s street-art village, around 150 artists and 300+ murals since 2014, free.
Afternoon. Guellala pottery village, roughly 450 potters, free; the Guellala Museum, about 10 TND, for the history.
Day 2 cost: Guellala Museum 10 TND, everything else free beyond food.
Day 3: Full Beach Day and Djerba Explore Park
Morning. A full morning at Aghir or La Seguia beach, quieter than Sidi Mahrès.
Afternoon. Djerba Explore Park in Midoun (Lalla Hadria Museum, a heritage village, and a crocodile farm, feeding at 5pm), combined about 20 TND. Between November and March, Ras Rmel/“Flamingo Island” is the seasonal alternative, a boat from Houmt Souk to see flamingos on the sandspit; confirm the boat price on the day.
Day 3 cost: Djerba Explore Park about 20 TND (or the Ras Rmel boat fare); the beach itself is free.
Day 4: Matmata and Tataouine, the Mainland Day Trip
Morning. Cross to the mainland (the Ajim-Jorf ferry, about 15-20 minutes, or the free El Kantara causeway if your tour goes that way) for Matmata, the troglodyte cave-village, including Hotel Sidi Driss, the actual interior of Luke Skywalker’s home in the original Star Wars.
Afternoon. Continue to Tataouine and Ksar Ouled Soltane, a fortified granary (ksar) that’s part of the visual root of “Tatooine,” on the same full-day loop most operators run (roughly 11 hours door to door). Chenini or Douiret, hilltop Berber cliff villages, are the usual add-on if time allows.
Evening. Back on Djerba for a late dinner.
Day 4 cost: This day depends entirely on how you book it, group tour, shared taxi, or private driver, so compare a couple of options rather than assume a fixed price; entrance to Ksar Ouled Soltane is a small separate fee, confirm on arrival.
Day 5: Midoun Market, the Star Wars Trail, and Departure
Morning. If it’s a Friday, Midoun’s weekly market, free; otherwise, one more pass through Houmt Souk’s souks.
Midday. The on-island Star Wars trail near Ajim: the Mos Eisley Cantina exterior, the Amghar Mosque (Obi-Wan’s house exterior), and Sidi Jmour, three free roadside stops distinct from yesterday’s mainland Matmata interior.
Afternoon. Last beach hour, then transfer to Djerba-Zarzis International Airport (DJE).
Day 5 cost: Free beyond food and your transfer.
Five days lets you do the mainland desert loop without rushing the beach side of the trip; the island’s own ticketed sights (fort, museum, Djerba Explore Park) add up to about 38 TND, with the mainland day priced separately by whichever operator you book. Keep your day-one exchange receipt for the whole trip. For more beach time and a Sahara overnight instead of a day trip, see the 6-day and 7-day itineraries, or the Djerba guide for the free-and-cheap version of all of it.
