7 days runs the Baroque core, three day trips, and a flex day
Days 1-6 here run the same plan as the 6-day itinerary : the Altstadt, the Residenzschloss and Neustadt, the Albertinum and the Elbe, Saxon Switzerland, then Meissen plus Moritzburg, then Leipzig. Day 7 is a flex day, useful if the weather turns or you’d rather slow down than add a fourth day trip. Dresden’s honest core is 2-3 days; everything past that is really about how much day-trip and museum time you want. For just the core, see the 2-day or 4-day plans.
Book these before you go
- The Historic Green Vault’s timed-entry ticket for Day 2, about €18, via GetYourGuide or directly at skd.museum; NOT included in the SKD combined ticket
- Nothing for Day 4 (Saxon Switzerland) beyond an early train
- Check the Meissen/Moritzburg and Leipzig train connections a day or two ahead for Days 5 and 6
Day 1: The Altstadt
Start at the Zwinger: the courtyard, Kronentor gate, and Nymphenbad fountain court are free to wander, and the Old Masters Picture Gallery inside, home to Raphael’s Sistine Madonna, is part of the SKD combined ticket if you’re visiting more than one paid sight today. Climb the Frauenkirche’s rebuilt dome (about €8-12) for the view, then walk Brühl’s Terrace and the free, outdoor Fürstenzug mural, 102m of about 23,000 Meissen porcelain tiles, the largest porcelain artwork in the world. The Katholische Hofkirche is free to step into on the way back.

Day 2: Residenzschloss and the Neustadt
The Residenzschloss holds the Green Vault in two separately-ticketed halves: the Historic Green Vault needs the timed ticket you booked ahead (about €18), while the New Green Vault is covered by the SKD combined ticket alongside the Albertinum. A Semperoper tour runs about €15 if opera architecture interests you. Cross into the Neustadt for the free Kunsthofpassage Funnel Wall, a look at the 1879 Pfunds Molkerei from the doorway, and the gilded Goldener Reiter statue, all free.
| Day 2 cost (EUR, per person) | Low | Higher |
|---|---|---|
| Bed | 25 | 60 |

Day 3: The Albertinum and the Elbe
The Albertinum (about €14) covers 19th-21st-century art, including Caspar David Friedrich. In the afternoon, take one of the Elbe paddle steamers, the world’s oldest and largest paddle-steamer fleet, running since 1836, or walk across the 1893 Blue Wonder bridge and ride the 1901 Schwebebahn suspension railway, the world’s oldest still operating. Round out the day back in the Neustadt for dinner.
| Day 3 cost (EUR, per person) | Low | Higher |
|---|---|---|

A paddle-steamer or Schwebebahn ride isn’t included above; both are priced separately and vary by route and season.
Day 4: Saxon Switzerland
Saxon Switzerland, about 35-45 minutes out by S-Bahn, is Dresden’s best-value day trip: the sandstone cliffs above the Elbe and the Bastei Bridge itself are free, so the only real cost is the train fare. Go early, ideally before 9am, since the Bastei Bridge draws tour buses later in the day.
| Day 4 cost (EUR, per person) | Low | Higher |
|---|---|---|
| Bed | 25 | 60 |
| Breakfast | 4 | 10 |
| Saxon Switzerland entry (Bastei Bridge) | 0 | 0 |

| Day 4 total | 47 | 107 |
The regional train fare to Saxon Switzerland isn’t included above; check current pricing at vvo-online.de.
Day 5: Meissen and Moritzburg
Meissen, about 33-40 minutes out, is European porcelain’s birthplace: the Meissen manufactory has made porcelain here since 1710, and the Albrechtsburg castle overlooks the same hill. Moritzburg, about 30-40 minutes the other way, is Saxony’s Baroque hunting palace on a lake, sometimes called the “Cinderella” palace after the film shot there; the two combine into a full day if your train connections line up.
| Day 5 cost (EUR, per person) | Low | Higher |
|---|---|---|
| Bed | 25 | 60 |
| Breakfast | 4 | 10 |
| Lunch | 6 | 15 |
| Dinner | 12 | 22 |
| Day 5 total (before sightseeing tickets) | 47 | 107 |
Meissen manufactory/Albrechtsburg entry, Moritzburg Palace entry, and the regional train fare aren’t included above; check the operators’ sites for current prices.
Day 6: Leipzig
Leipzig, about 65-90 minutes by train, is arguably its own destination rather than a quick day trip: it’s Bach’s city, buried at the Thomaskirche, and the center of the 1989 Peaceful Revolution that helped end East Germany, both free to take in from the street and squares even without museum tickets. Give it a full day given the travel time each way.
| Day 6 cost (EUR, per person) | Low | Higher |
|---|---|---|
| Bed | 25 | 60 |
| Breakfast | 4 | 10 |
| Lunch | 6 | 15 |
| Dinner | 12 | 22 |
| Day 6 total (before sightseeing tickets) | 47 | 107 |
Leipzig museum entries and the regional/InterCity train fare aren’t included above; check bahn.de and individual museum sites for current prices.
Day 7: A flex day for museums or rain
Keep the last day loose. The Panometer (about €16, show-dependent) or Pillnitz Palace (about €8) both work as a rainy-day museum flex if the weather turns, and Grosser Garten is free to walk if it doesn’t, its zoo (about €16) optional. It’s also a good day to revisit the Zwinger’s galleries at a slower pace, or finally book the Semperoper tour (about €15) if you skipped it on Day 2.
| Day 7 cost (EUR, per person) | Low | Higher |
|---|---|---|
| Bed | 25 | 60 |
| Breakfast | 4 | 10 |
| Panometer or Pillnitz Palace (optional) | 0 | 16 |
| Lunch | 6 | 15 |
| Dinner | 12 | 22 |
| Transit | 0 | 9.50 |
| Day 7 total | 47 | 132.50 |
Getting around on 7 days
Days 1-3 and Day 7 are walkable with the odd tram ride; a DVB day pass (about €9.50) is worth it if you’re moving a lot. Days 4-6 all need the regional S-Bahn or InterCity network out of the city center, none of it covered by the city day pass. Full transit details are in the main Dresden guide .
Book the Historic Green Vault ahead, and check the Meissen/Moritzburg and Leipzig timetables a day or two out. Leave Day 7 loose rather than pre-booking it; it’s meant to absorb whatever the week’s weather or energy calls for.
