Dresden in 4 Days on a Budget (Daily Costs)

4 days covers the Baroque core plus Dresden’s best free day trip
Days 1 and 2 here run the same plan as the 2-day itinerary : the Altstadt’s Zwinger, Frauenkirche, and Brühl’s Terrace, then the Residenzschloss and Neustadt. Day 3 adds the Albertinum and the Elbe; Day 4 is Saxon Switzerland, free once you’re there and the best-value day trip Dresden has. If 4 days is more than you need, the 2-day itinerary covers just the core; for more day trips, see the 6-day and 7-day plans.
Book these before you go
- The Historic Green Vault’s timed-entry ticket for Day 2, about €18, via GetYourGuide or directly at skd.museum; NOT included in the SKD combined ticket
- Nothing for Day 4: Saxon Switzerland’s Bastei Bridge needs no ticket, just an early train
Day 1: The Altstadt
Start at the Zwinger: the courtyard, Kronentor gate, and Nymphenbad fountain court are free to wander, and the Old Masters Picture Gallery inside, home to Raphael’s Sistine Madonna, is part of the SKD combined ticket if you’re visiting more than one paid sight today (the €32 two-day version usually beats buying the €28 one-day ticket twice if you’re also using it on Day 3). Climb the Frauenkirche’s rebuilt dome (about €8-12) for the view, then walk Brühl’s Terrace and the free, outdoor Fürstenzug mural, 102m of about 23,000 Meissen porcelain tiles, the largest porcelain artwork in the world. The Katholische Hofkirche is free to step into on the way back.

Day 2: Residenzschloss and the Neustadt
The Residenzschloss holds the Green Vault in two separately-ticketed halves: the Historic Green Vault needs the timed ticket you booked ahead (about €18), while the New Green Vault is covered by the SKD combined ticket alongside the Albertinum. A Semperoper tour runs about €15 if opera architecture interests you. Cross into the Neustadt for the free Kunsthofpassage Funnel Wall, a look at the 1879 Pfunds Molkerei from the doorway, and the gilded Goldener Reiter statue, all free.

Day 3: The Albertinum and the Elbe
The Albertinum (about €14, or included if you bought the two-day SKD ticket on Day 1) covers 19th-21st-century art, including Caspar David Friedrich, a level up from the previous two days’ Baroque focus. In the afternoon, take one of the Elbe paddle steamers, the world’s oldest and largest paddle-steamer fleet, running since 1836, or walk across the 1893 Blue Wonder bridge and ride the 1901 Schwebebahn suspension railway, the world’s oldest still operating (both priced separately; check sächsische-dampfschiffahrt.de and the operator’s site, since fares vary). Round out the day back in the Neustadt for dinner.

A paddle-steamer or Schwebebahn ride isn’t included above; both are priced separately and vary by route and season.
Day 4: Saxon Switzerland
Saxon Switzerland, about 35-45 minutes out by S-Bahn, is Dresden’s best-value day trip: the sandstone cliffs above the Elbe and the Bastei Bridge itself are free, so the only real cost is the train fare. Go early, ideally before 9am, since the Bastei Bridge draws tour buses later in the day. Treat this as a full day; it isn’t a rushed half-day add-on.

Getting around on 4 days
Days 1-3 are walkable with a tram ride or two; a DVB day pass (about €9.50) pays off once you’re moving a lot. Day 4 needs the regional S-Bahn out of the city, not covered by the city day pass. Full transit details are in the main Dresden guide .
Book the Historic Green Vault’s timed ticket ahead, and check the regional train timetable the night before your Saxon Switzerland day so you can catch an early train.
